"It is something to cling onto at least for the next couple of weeks, I don't think it was a great performance but I don't think it needed to be.

"United have stayed on in the Champions League. It is a knockout competition. Logic would say they won't progress further but you never know, look at Chelsea they won it a few years ago when not many people fancied them."

A lot of relived Manchester United fans are on the air on BBC Radio 5 live. Relief, not joy, is the overwhelming emotion.

Chris in Rotherham: Excellent night for United, enjoy the moment, well done, but are they REALLY good enough to get any further?

Eric: Well done to United, but Ronaldo or Messi would beat this lot on their own!

Eric of Blackley Manchester: SAF has to take part of the blame because he failed to replace a midfield general and a play maker. The players need to accept and support Moyes, some do and some don't appear to.

"United still haven't replaced Paul Scholes. They had to play Ryan Giggs, he played well, it was a good ball for the penalty, but the only problem is against one of the top teams it is not going to work. It is a problem position but it is one of many problem positions.

"The thing about the Champions League is teams let you play a little bit more, so it is a bit different to the helter skelter of the Premier League.

"Giggs can't play that often in the Premier League. However, when he does play he is a calming influence. The thing with Michael Carrick and Giggs, when they play together they know where the other one is."

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney: "We had a desire to win, and as you can hear from the fans now and against Liverpool they were fantastic and they deserved this.

"We owed ourselves [a result like this] and the fans, the manager, everyone. This a great result and hopefully it can kick start our season."

Ben Goodwin: , externalThere isn't a team in the last eight that United have a chance against. This will hurt them in the long run mark my words.

Bruce Ha:, external Manchester United need to play with that sense of urgency to start every match, they worked their socks off tonight

Keely McDonough: , external Never ever write this team off. Guts and determination. This is the Manchester United I have missed.

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs: "It is always tough not to concede a goal and score three but we managed it. There was pressure especially after [the loss to Liverpool on] Sunday, so we owed the fans a result like this.

"They were unbelievable. We have had good results and performances this season but have not followed it up. We won't get carried away now but we have to carry on like we did today."

"The quarter-finals are a mouth watering prospect. I think Manchester United are probably eighth in terms of rankings in that list but they will take it.

"David de Gea will get player of the season. their goalkeeper Roberto, it must be that we have paid £6 million for him we have to play him. Robin Van Persie must have seen him standing there for the free-kick and thought he surely won't stay there but he did and he just passed it in."

David Moyes was understandably delighted at the full-time whistle, beaming and buzzing as he trotted away down the touchline. Whistling like a pressure cooker.

Olympiakos captain Giannis Maniatis was left in tears though. Gutted.

"It is a really good win for Manchester United when you bear in mind the pressure they were under and the manager. They were helped by Olympiakos goalkeeper Roberto but they send the punters home happy and it has been a while since they have done that here.

"And they are through to the next round in the Champions League."
