"Anfield Road is absolutely rammed with Liverpool fans in full voice awaiting the team bus. The heaving crowds extend all the way back to the area outside the Main Stand entrance, which is making it pretty tricky for VIPs to enter - club legends Jamie Carragher, Terry McDermott and David Johnson all receiving a warm welcome as they weave their way through.

"A straw poll of the press corps who aren't tucking into their chicken pie, mash and red cabbage suggests they give Liverpool only the slimmest of chances today but, as Steven Gerrard says in his programme notes citing Olympiakos, Istanbul and the 2006 FA Cup final, "there is no such thing as a lost cause"."

"Manchester City's futuristic team bus has just arrived, greeted by a thunderous rendition of 'Blue Moon' and spitting out players to loud cheers and the background of an enthusiastic announcer and an Oasis soundtrack. The sun even came out briefly too. Last off, after quite a delay? Fit-again striker Sergio Aguero. Good job the driver did not drive off with him still on board!"

The ultimate, the definitive, the final day to end all final days.

Liverpool were originally scheduled to meet Arsenal on 23 April 1989, but it was postponed until 26 May - after all other top-flight sides had finished their fixtures - following the Hillsborough disaster.

By the time the game came around, the Gunners had let slip a commanding lead at the top of the table with Liverpool, unbeaten since the start of January, three points ahead and heavy favourites to wrap up the title.

Arsenal needed a two-goal victory to overhaul the Reds and Michael Thomas duly delivered their second in a 2-0 win in the second minute of injury time to break Liverpool hearts and set Nick Hornby scribbling.

Is it the best final day ever? How about Agueerroooo? Any other suggestions?

"Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has just been given a noisy reception by the fans as he made his way into the ground and there are quite a few City fans from the United Arab Emirates - home of the club's billionaire owners here too. This group are over for their first City match and were pretty confident when I asked them how they thought today would end up: "City champions!" was the (very loud) and repeated response."

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on MOTD2 Extra

"I would take Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines as my two left-backs. There is no way you can take a player like Jon Flanagan or Luke Shaw, who have so little experience. You want to look to the bench and see real experience there.

"It would be unthinkable if a Roberto Carlos, or a Cafu did not go to the World Cup in their prime. That is what he have with Cole. Shaw looks a great player but it is too soon for him, and the same for Flanagan, it would put him under far too much pressure."

Former Premier League midfielder Kevin Kilbane on MOTD2 Extra

"I would take Jon Flanagan ahead of Kyle Walker at right-back. I know he has been played at left-back but for me he is more of natural defender than Walker, and has had a much better season.

"For me it's about the balance. In Glen Johnson on the England right you have a naturally attacking full-back, and to counter that on the other side I would choose Ashley Cole, who is better defensively than Leighton Baines. Flanagan, like Cole, can still go forward but is more defensive, and he has been in the top four all season."

    Steven Gerrard still believes.

"At this club we all know that there is no such thing as a lost cause. Olympiakos, Istanbul, the FA Cup final against West Ham in 2006 - on many occasions in the past the odds have been heavily against us and we've fought back to go on and enjoy success," the Liverpool skipper writes in today's programme.

"That's why, while we still have a chance to be champions, we'll give our all until the final whistle blows today."

  16. Managers on the way out?published at 13:20 British Summer Time 11 May 2014

    The departedImage source, PA

This season is the first season in Premier League history to see 10 managers leave a club before the final day - but are we done yet?

Malky Mackay, Ian Holloway, David Moyes, Martin Jol, Rene Meulensteen, Chris Hughton, Paolo Di Canio, Michael Laudrup, Andre Villas-Boas and Steve Clarke have all had the P45 since August.

Tim Sherwood (57.14%) has the highest winning percentage of any Tottenham Hotspur manager in Premier League history. But will he still be in charge come early August? The man himself said he felt like 'a supply teacher' just this week.

West Brom's Pepe Mel is another who could be facing his last game today, while the likes of Paul Lambert, Felix Magath, Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew are all under scrutiny.

Will Southampton be waving goodbye to a few key men today then? Their fans will certainly hope not, though the future of the manager is far from certain...

  18. Postpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 11 May 2014

Independent journalist Sam Wallace on MOTD2 Extra

"When you talk about the best young English players, I think what could happen at Southampton is kind of a justification for having rich owners at football clubs. If you look at the case of Chelsea, if Roman Abramovich had not arrived in 2003 they would have perhaps struggled to hold on to John Terry and Frank Lampard.

"Unless you have the money to protect your young players, you have one good season and all the best ones are picked off. It could become very difficult for Southampton."

You have to go back to 2001 and the days of Samuele Dalla Bona, Bernard Lambourde and Emerson Thome for the last time Chelsea were without Frank Lampard.

The club's leading goalscorer has been influential for so long at Stamford Bridge that it's hard to imagine a Chelsea season without him. But next season could be just that.

Lampard, 35, John Terry, 33, and Ashley Cole, 33, are all out of contract this summer and the trio looked pretty emotional last week after the final game at Stamford Bridge.

Will they all be off? Jose Mourinho was keeping his cards close to his chest this week, merely saying that he had compiled a report and that it was up to the club...
