"You can't concede the first goal against Uruguay. I agree with Chris Waddle [19:54 entry] that they are very similar to Atletico Madrid and once you concede it is very difficult to break them down.

"They have two dogs in the middle of midfield and could make it very tough for England but if England were to score first I would see them winning out comfortably."

So far so good for Uruguay but it hasn't been the best game at the World Cup so far. Attacking wise, there has not been too much to concern England and probably the toughest task they will face is breaking these two down.

"Uruguay have certainly improved since that opener and, one Joel Campbell shot aside, look extremely comfortable in possession.

"Coach Oscar Tabarez, the oldest manager in the World Cup, has been up and down from his dugout two or three times but by and large he appears content with his side. Luis Suarez hasn't moved a muscle, yet."

Glen, Cornwall: Joel Campbell looks the best player on the pitch. Don't loan him again Mr. Wenger we need him.

"Keylor Navas is showing why people are raving about him because you try to cut down the angle, it was great footwork and he got a strong arm to it. That's the best save I've seen in this tournament so far."

Superb save by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas! A shot from Diego Forlan takes a huge deflection and the ball looks set to loop into the back of the net but Navas leaps and bends his body back to thump the ball behind for a corner.

Finally a bit of magic from Uruguay as Martin Caceres and Cristian Rodriguez play a delightful one-two to take out a Costa Rica defender. Rodriguez then finds Diego Forlan just outside the area and the former Manchester United striker tries to bend a shot home, but watches as it drops just wide of the post.

    Brad Friedel

"If Costa Rica continue to play with a number nine and everyone else behind the ball, at some stage Uruguay will pick them off with a second.

"Campbell's never one against one with a defender and sometimes one against four."

  11. Postpublished at 20:39 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

Joel Campbell's pace and strength is a real thorn in the Uruguay defence. He tries to get in between Diego Lugano and Diego Godin to a bouncing ball but the former is taking no chances, smashing the ball out for a Costa Rica throw.

Costa Rica have responded well to that goal for Uruguay as Christian Bolanos sends a free-kick towards the far post, the clearance is weak and Giancarlo Gonzalez pounces on the loose ball but his shot is deflected into the sidenetting.

"This game needed that goal. Until then there wasn't a great deal of quality on show and Costa Rica have set up to not get beaten.

"At first glance I wasn't sure referee Felix Brych had got that right, but having seen a replay it looks a good decision. The Uruguay fans inside this stadium are delighted, as are the neutrals. We should see a better game."

Costa Rica look to respond immediately with Arsenal's Joel Campbell evidently keen to add another wonder strike to his collection as he lets fly with a fierce effort from well over 25 yards. It is wide, but not by much.

"As a defender you're putting a referee in a position where he's going to have to make it a call. The referee's looking straight at Junior Diaz and he puts two arms around the player.

"It wasn't an unbelievable rugby tackle but he made the referee make a decision."

  19. Postpublished at 20:23 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

It has not been the most thrilling start to a game we have seen at this World Cup so far; the heat and Costa Rica's disciplined defence most likely playing a part in that. An opportunity now for Uruguay, though, as Cristian Rodriguez is fouled midway inside the Costa Rica half.
