Edinson Cavani blazes high and wide

"You can see how much Uruguay miss Luis Suarez because even when Edinson Cavani made his run forward they only had one player in the box. They need to get more players forward if they're going to break this defence down.

"If you're facing a bank of four or five you have to move the ball quickly and have third runners and they're doing none of it. They're just hitting long balls up to Cavani."

Uruguay have the ball in the back of the net after Diego Lugano whips in a cross that Diego Godin converts. He wheels away to celebrate, before spotting the offside flag. Nothing wrong with the decision.

Luis Suarez probably welcomes the chance to sit this one out, at least from the start, with the players on the pitch already drenched in sweat because of the hot and humid conditions. Wouldn't fancy running about in that for 90 minutes.

Costa Rica give Uruguay an early scare as Christian Bolanos's corner hits the hand of a leaping Diego Lugano. Costa Rica fans call for a penalty, but the referee had already blown for a foul after Oscar Duarte had pushed Lugano.

"Straight away you can see the strict back five across the back for Costa Rica and that is how they will defend all tournament long.

"They know they don't have the capabilities of the other teams and they're going to try to make it very difficult for teams to break them down.

"As soon as Costa Rica lose the ball, the wingers sprint back and breaking down nine players plus the goalkeeper is hard to do but they are also going to find it extremely difficult to attack."

Uruguay are probing the packed Costa Rica backline in these early stages, trying to find a weakness. Costa Rica, though, are not giving them an inch as the back five keep close to the Uruguay forwards. Cristian Rodriguez attempts to catch the defence out with a deep cross, but he over hits it and the ball sails out for a goal-kick.

Pat:, external My first memory of a World Cup is Italia 90 and Costa Rica beating Paul McStay and his boys 1-0. Scotland failed to qualify for the knockout stage.

John:, external Really looking forward to seeing Joel Campbell. Always looks lively and full of goals. Arsenals striker problem solved perhaps?

Costa Rica players are equally focused as their national anthem is played, clearly singing every word. The two teams exchange handshakes. Kick-off seconds way....

Focussed expressions on the faces of the Uruguay players as they sing their very patriotic-sounding national anthem. Plenty of hand on hearts from the Uruguay fans too.

"Uruguay are organised and if you wanted to liken them to a club side they're like Atletico Madrid.

"They're solid, they're a group, they're a unit. They're not a super team to watch but they get results."

Out venture the Uruguay and Costa Rica teams on to the pitch at the Estadio Castelao, where there are still lots and lots of empty seats. The heat clearly a bit too much for some folk.

Costa Rica are pretty inexperienced on the world stage, having only qualified for a World Cup on three previous occasions.

Their best performance came at Italia '90, also their first appearance at the finals, when they reached the last 16.

That campaign included the famous upset of Scotland, Juan Arnaldo Cayasso getting the better of Jim Leighton to score in a 1-0 win.

"I like the Uruguay right-back Maxi Pereira. This is a very industrious set-up. Missing Suarez is massive because the two up front aren't going to be able to hold the ball and break Costa Rica's back five so they'll have to use the width and Pereira's one to watch.

"We won't see a free-flowing Costa Rica. When they travel they don't get good results and it will be a strict, rigid back five. Keylor Navas is a good goalkeeper but yet to be proven on the world stage. These three games are really going to test his resolve."

"Just under 15 minutes to kick-off in Fortaleza and still an awful lot of empty seats in the stadium.

"One reason is the heat, an awful lot of fans are using the shaded areas of the concourse because their seats in the direct sunlight.

"The other reason is the traffic problems we have seen around the stadium. A 2km police exclusion zone means it is taking people an awful long time to get here. Many, it seems, will miss kick-off."

    Uruguay team

Even without Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan should have enough about them to keep the Costa Rica defenders busy.

Forlan was top scorer at the 2010 World Cup while Cavani knocked in 22 goals for Paris St-Germain last season.

    Costa Rica team

Without Luis Suarez in the starting XI, it could take Uruguay some time to find a way past a stifling Costa Rica defence. They have packed five at the back as they look to frustrate their opponents.

Up front, there is a familiar name for Arsenal fans, with their striker Joel Campbell starting. Manchester United fans will also remember him after he scored a stunning goal against the Red Devils in the Champions League while on loan at Olympiakos.
