Uruguay's preparations were disrupted by an unusual invasion yesterday, with hundreds of ants found in the team's hotel.

Their goalkeeper Fernando Muslera snapped a picture of the unwelcome visitors on his bed, posting it on Twitter, external and later explained: "It was more funny than anything. Staff came and changed the sheets straight away."

Still, I bet he will take ants in his bed in exchange for a clean sheet tonight...

"The players have just started their warm-up down on the field in front of me. As expected, Luis Suarez is only fit enough for a place on the bench, so Uruguay start with Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani in attack. Diego Lugano, who has been released by West Brom, captains the side.

"Arsenal striker Joel Campbell starts as a lone striker for Costa Rica, while Bryan Ruiz is expected to start on the left of a front three."

  4. How they got here - Costa Ricapublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

A strong home record helped Costa Rica qualify comfortably for Brazil as they finished second in final qualifying group, behind the USA.

Jorge Luis Pinto's side won all their games in San Jose, while their strong defence - they conceded the least amount of goals in their group - helped them to pick up points on the road.

With several European-based players in their squad, this is arguably their strongest side for some years.

It is a bright blue sky above the Estadio Castelao as the players head out to go through their pre-match warm-ups. It is hot out there, just shy of 30C, but these are conditions that should not pose too much of a problem for these two sides.

  6. How they got here - Uruguaypublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

Having reached the World Cup semi-final just four years ago, there was, for a time, a very realistic possibility of Uruguay not qualifying for this tournament.

After winning three and drawing two of their first five games, they then picked up a paltry two points from their next six matches, leaving them well off the pace in their group.

However, four wins in their final five games were enough to snatch a play-off against Jordan, which they won comfortably.

    Luis Suarez.

The man who staged a huge character reinvention to turn himself from villain to hero in the Premier League last season with countless stunning performances.

Tonight, the Liverpool man is missing from the starting XI. Instead being rested to ensure he is fully fit for games against Italy and, crucially, England.

After redeeming himself in the eyes of many, could the next few days ultimately see him turn villain once again?

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez starts on the bench as expected in his country's Group D opener against Costa Rica. Diego Forlan is in the first XI in his absence and partners Edinson Cavani in attack.

Costa Rica had forward Alvaro Saborio ruled out of the tournament with a broken foot and Arsenal's Joel Campbell, who was on loan at Olympiakos last season, comes in as his replacement. Defenders Michael Umana and Junior Diaz had been suffering with flu but both start.

    Uruguay

"Uruguay fans have invaded Fortaleza in huge numbers today. I'm on the way to Estadio Castelao in pretty awful traffic but there are a group of Uruguay fans on the road who have three drums and a set of cymbals in the back of their van. The van door has been slid back and they are hanging out as they drive along.

"They've already managed to blag a few free beers from a generous owner of one pavement bar and are currently in negotiations with the driver of a well-known soft drinks van to see if they add to their winnings. Very, very hot here, by the way, likely to still be well above 30C come kick-off time."

Hello! No sooner have the Colombia and Greece players made their way off the pitch in Belo Horizonte, we have taken a digital flight over to Fortaleza to provide live text commentary on Uruguay v Costa Rica.

After the goals, celebrations and controversial incidents we have been treated to so far, I wonder what could unfold at Estadio Castelao?

Sixty-four years ago a samba band stood patiently by the side of the pitch, waiting to play a new song called 'Brazil the Winners'.

Newspapers had already printed special editions with the headline "Champions of the World" as tournament hosts Brazil prepared to take on Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final. The result, it was believed by many, merely a formality.

Except Uruguay did not stick to the script as an Alcides Ghiggia goal 11 minutes from time gave them a 2-1 victory, leaving an expected nation stunned.

Their path to the World Cup title began with a routine victory over football minnows Bolivia. Tonight, they face Costa Rica. Could Uruguay be about to take the first step towards breaking Brazilian hearts again?
