    Former England defender Phil Neville

"Mario Balotelli's got everything in his locker. I've played against him and you wouldn't want to face him one v one with his speed, it's just putting it altogether. He's the person they look for and maybe he enjoys that responsibility."

Italy just wrestling control in midfield now, the Brazilian fans cheering every pass. England don't seem too popular, as Mario Balotelli almost gets on the end of another Antonio Candreva cross.

Ross Barkley is warming up. Who's coming off?

  4. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 00:16 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"You can always tell by the reaction of the player that goes down and Steven Gerrard wasn't appealing for a penalty there. He wasn't appealing but there was contact and you've seen them given. It was the reaction of Steven Gerrard that went against him there.

"Thiago Motta might be put in there to stop Raheem Sterling and getting at the Italian back four. He'll offer more support."

First change for Italy. Thiago Motta replaces Marco Verratti. A ute for a coupe.

  6. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 00:15 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Cracking play again! Steven Gerrard chests the ball to Raheem Sterling, runs on to the return pass and drives into space before he is baulked by a blue shirt.

    Again there's no change...

Mark, Berkshire: Woeful defending yet again from England, do the basics right and we would still have a clean sheet tonight.

  8. CLOSE!published at 00:13 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Wayne Rooney close to his first World Cup goal. He picks the ball up in space, runs away from a man and then chances his arm from 25 yards, skidding a low shot just beyond the far corner. Lovely effort.

Glen Johnson then puts in a cracking cross but nobody is on it.

England still have Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert available of course...

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty in Manaus

"The tactical switch of moving Danny Welbeck to the right has not cured that problem on England's left flank. It was once again the supply line for Mario Balotelli's goal. What we have seen already, though, is that this England team really look like they have got a goal in them."

"The moment Antonio Candreva cut inside on to his left you could see the gaol coming. Mario Balotelli peeled off at the far post and again England are masters of their own downfall - not defending properly.

"It was a brilliant cross but it should never have got there. England have tried to address the problem by putting Danny Welbeck there, but Leighton Baines is outnumbered. It was a very good header and Joe Hart had no chance but it was a poor goal to concede and now England have it all to do."

  11. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 00:12 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Danny Welbeck is put on the floor in a tangle with Giorgio Chiellini but referee Bjorn Kuipers waves him away. Drama everywhere you look.

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"It was that right-hand side again, four or five crosses went in in the first half and when the ball went over Gary Cahill's head he was expecting Glen Johnson to be there but it was a wonderful header.

"They've not managed to pick up Candreva and stop the cross all night. As a full-back you have to cover your centre-back at the far post."

What have England got in the tank? Almost an instant response as Daniel Sturridge wriggles through two men to open up a shooting chance before finally being crowded out. Could be more goals in this one...

  14. GOALpublished at 00:08 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

That is not better! Italy lead and it comes down the right wing again. Antonio Candreva beats Leighton Baines far too easily and delivers a telling ball in, Mario Balotelli's movement is sublime and he is free to nod in at the back stick.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 00:07 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

England start the half well again as Daniel Sturridge beats a man to fire in low and force Salvatore Sirigu into a low stop. Better!

"Just a change for England, but not one in terms of personnel. Wayne Rooney has gone over to the right side, swapping with Danny Welbeck, who is far more disciplined in his defensive work and will support Leighton Baines, who was being outnumbered in the first half."

  17. Postpublished at 00:06 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

We've had 24 goals in 48 hours. Brazil has delivered the goods.

Danny Welbeck looks to get in behind and is almost in. Looks like Welbeck has moved over to the left to help Leighton Baines out, with Wayne Rooney on the right.

    Former England midfielder Danny Murphy

"There's some tired legs for England but overall it is positive from their point of view. Up until their goal Italy hadn't caused England problems. England must not get carried away going forward. The players looked like they are enjoying it except for the last few minutes before the interval."
