Decent effort from Leighton Baines. Over the wall and into the corner but Salvatore Sirigu makes the save.

Wayne Rooney then shanks the corner clean out of play. Dearie me...

"Apart from the goal I don't really think Mario Balotelli had much of a contribution. Coming on for England, I think Jack Wilshere will probably play a little further forward than Jordan Henderson did and look to play those little balls behind the Italian defence."

There's a lot to like about this England display. But nobody wants a defeat. We edge towards the final 15 minutes.

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"It's a positive change from Roy Hodgson again. There's no need to have two defensive midfielders in there with Italy only having one up.

"Jack Wilshere loves driving forward with the ball and has great combination play with Ross Barkley that we saw against Honduras."

David, Bingley: The equation is what we should have expected. We have to beat Uruguay and Costa Rica to go through. If we don't do that we deserve to go home.

"All the talk has been about bringing the youth to this tournament, but I said all along that I would have brought John Terry, I would have done everything to bring him out of retirement. If you want to to do well at this tournament, you have to have experience. Spain last night suffered massively because they were missing the experience of Carles Puyol. I'm not saying Leighton Baines has done badly, but I also would have brought Ashley Cole to play at left-back."

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 00:31 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Both sides make a change. Ciro Immobile is on for Italy, Jack Wilshere on for England.

Off come Mario Balotelli - who won't like that - and Jordan Henderson.

Into the last 20 minutes of what has been a very entertaining game. England need a goal though or it's a losing start which could prove very costly indeed.

England have had 50% possession in the second half. As have Italy of course...

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"It's that final pass or cross that is just missing for England and committing more men into the box because some of our attacking play has been really good at times."

  12. Postpublished at 00:27 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Antonio Candreva has been Italy's best player. He's free all the time down the right-hand side and gets in a low shot which doesn't worry Joe Hart. Jack Wilshere is warming up.

James:, external The sooner Rooney comes off the better. Any of Sturridge, Welbeck, definitely Lambert, would've buried it.

England looking slick and dangerous. When was the last time you could say that? Raheem Sterling eases away from a man and wins a corner. Still 25 minutes left.

"That was a great opportunity for Wayne Rooney - Roy Hodgson throws his hands up to his face because Rooney did well but missed by about a foot. On target and that was in because the goalkeeper had gone the other way.

"With the substitution I think again it's very positive from Hodgson. He hasn't done anything wrong so far. He tried to address the problems England have on the left hand side, but in the end the players have to follow instructions and they haven't."

Ross Barkley's first involvement is a shot, cutting in from the left and bending in a low shot which Salvatore Sirigu has to push away. England have had 11 attempts on goal, which is more than during Fabio Capello's entire reign I think...

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"Ross Barkley's a wonderful talent, he won't be scared of this occasion. I think Roy Hodgson did right not to select him too early but now his time has come. Raheem Sterling has come out to the left to replace Danny Welbeck.

"That was a great chance for Wayne Rooney. He's back in his central position now, where he likes playing. As an attacking force we've created chances and caused the Italian back-four problems tonight."

  19. CLOSE!published at 00:21 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Chance! Oh England should be level!

Leighton Baines picks out Wayne Rooney with a great pass, he cuts inside and then rolls his shot agonisingly wide of the near post.

Still half an hour to go. When was the last time England had this many chances in a big game? Encouraging signs, despite the scoreline.

  20. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 00:20 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

Daniel Sturridge curls one wide from 25 yards, but it was never really troubling the goal.

A positive change for England. Ross Barkley on for Danny Welbeck.
