Peter Odemwingie has come on in an attempt to inject some urgency. The Stoke striker is on the pitch for just a few moments when he is clattered by Andranik Teymourian, who receives the game's first booking for his efforts.

This match is dying on its knees.

"Call it a park game or Sunday League football, it's just cheap possession and anyone that gets in the final third panics and has no quality. If Iran get a draw out of this they'll be delighted.

"The centre-forward for Iran has run himself into the ground and he needs someone up front with more legs. The ball's coming back far too easily and they're being forced deeper."

Shola Ameobi has been pretty lively, certainly compared to some of his team-mates, since coming on but he is guilty of wasting the best chance of the match after out-jumping Amir Hossein Sadeghi.

That missed header could come back to haunt Nigeria. More jeers from the African fans.

Iran have only won one World Cup match in their history, but Carlos Queiroz's men are beginning to believe they can secure another famous victory.

A decent spell of pressure ends with Charlton's Reza Ghoochannejhad firing narrowly over.

BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter:, external "Iran had more clean sheets than any nation in qualifying. Nigeria were the lowest scoring. Who would've thought?"

Nigeria's fans inside Arena da Baixada have had enough. The jeers have started as their team continue to cause little threat to their opponents. In contrast, Iran's fans are cheering every time a white shirt touches the ball.

"There is a lot of talent in this Nigerian team. Nerves can get the better of you and they have looked nervous in possession."

"Iran have come here thinking if they can get three draws they'll go home heroes. The problem Nigeria have is that for all the football they play, they don't put the ball in the back of the net.

"Even when Iran put a few passes together, they stick it in the box and there's one against four and the goalkeeper. Emmanuel Emenike is too greedy. He puts his hand up afterwards to say sorry but he's too selfish."

  10. Postpublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

Iran's defence continues to frustrate. Nigeria have been reduced to shooting from outside the area, Emmanuel Emenike screwing another opportunity wide after decent build-up play from Shola Ameobi.

The African champions need to get a move on.

"Emmanuel Emenike will feed off Ameobi. Ameobi has got good technique and if they play the ball up to him, he's strong and can link the play.

"I feel sorry for Victor Moses because he'd probably enjoy playing with Ameobi."

And here comes Shola. Nigeria boss Stephen Keshi has had enough and clearly wants to inject some tempo into this game.

Ameobi comes on for Victor Moses, who looks less than impressed that his evening is being cut short. But the Chelsea player can have few complaints after a disappointing game.

"Nigeria have got options. They can put Shola Ameobi on to go a little more direct. He might be able to bring people into play. Peter Odemwingie we know from the Premier League is a clever player."

"Victor Moses was heavily involved for the first 15 minutes on the left wing but he has come out to the right and has had very little impact on the game."

Nigeria defender Juwon Oshaniwa is rolling around on the ground after being clattered by Amir Hossein Sadeghi.

Moments later the Super Eagles win a corner but Victor Moses's delivery is poor to say the least. Little evidence so far that this game will improve.

"Nigeria have to move the ball quicker and dislodge that Iranian backline. Can they use the pace of Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa to get at Iran?"

The players are on their way back out at Arena da Baixada. Let's hope it's a better 45 minutes. Nigeria's players form a group huddle. A big 45 minutes coming up in their World Cup campaign.
