This isn't a cracker, I'm afraid. Nigeria might have most of the possession but they are struggling to hurt their opponents. Oboabona is back on for the Super Eagles.

There was bound to be a disappointing game somewhere in this tournament. This is shaping up to be that match.

Nigeria's Godfrey Oboabona is carried off on a stretcher after coming off worse in a challenge with Charlton forward Reza Ghoochannejhad.

The Super Eagles are down to 10 men while Oboabona receives treatment on the side of the pitch.

"Nigeria have got quick lads up front. I've played against Victor Moses and he is very unpredictable. With that pace up front they'll be a threat."

For the first time Iran are beginning to settle but they are not helping themselves by gifting Nigeria possession with some careless passing.

Celtic's Efe Ambrose skips past an Iran defender before whipping in a cross that Alireza Haghighi manages to hold this time.

"Argentina and Bosnia looked very good last night and you feel these two are probably the weakest in the group. Both Nigeria and Iran will have to win this if to stand a realistic chance of going through."

"Iran like a tackle and they're competing well. I just wish they'd slow down and get their foot on the ball when they get it.

"Victor Moses has always got a trick and a lot of talent, jhe ust can't put it together as a package week in week out. He's still young but as a flare player you need a bit of consistency, which he's not had over the last two or three seasons."

Plenty of possession by Nigeria in these early exchanges.

Victor Moses's pace is causing Iran all kinds of bother and Carlos Queiroz's first problem is to stop the raids from the right that are putting his team under big pressure.

"Goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi didn't look comfortable, he came through bodies and there is not much in that. It looks a fair challenge and he got very lucky. That is poor goalkeeping."

There's plenty of Iran supporters inside the ground and they're adding to the party atmosphere.

They're a right noisy lot even though they haven't had much to cheer in this game so far. Iran keeper Alireza Haghighi spills a corner before Ogenyi Onazi drills an effort narrowly wide. All the action in the Iran area so far.

"Iran are getting behind the ball and Nigeria are playing their way in. Iran look nervous and energetic and trying to compete all over the park. Nigeria are just feeling their way into the game."

Iran are defending deep in the early stages. Victor Moses is clearly determined to join the party and tests Alireza Haghighi will a low shot from the edge of the area. It's a confident start from the men in green.

There's a huge din inside the stadium as the teams line up for the national anthems. Iran's players look as though they mean business. Nigeria's national anthem calls for loyalty and togetherness. Let's see if they take note.

There's a carnival atmosphere at Arena da Baixada as the teams emerge from the tunnel. There's a sea of colour in the stands and on the pitch. Iran are in white shirts with a tinge of green and red. Nigeria are in their all green strip.

  20. From Super Chickens to Super Eaglespublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 16 June 2014

What of Nigeria? Dubbed the 'Super Chickens' after failing to qualify for the 2012 African Cup of Nations, Stephen Keshi's side arrive in Brazil as the 2013 African champions.

They scored 11 goals in qualifying but only conceded four times - a defensive record bettered only by world champions Spain.

Sunday Mba, who hit the winner in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final, has been left out of the squad but there is a sprinkling of Premier League names that have made it to Brazil, while Celtic defender Efe Ambrose has also made it and starts against Iran.
