  3. Xavi outpublished at 19:17 British Summer Time 18 June 2014

Spain start a game in a major tournament without Xavi for the first time since a 2-1 win over Greece in the final group game of Euro 2008 - when Spain were already through and left out the whole side.

    It's a big change.

"Spain were very poor second half defensively against the Netherlands. The two centre halves were exposed and Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben tore them to bits. Gerard Pique has played a lot of football and Javi Martinez is nice and fresh so I can see his point. Pedro gives them more legs in midfield as well, They looked liked they died on their feet a bit in the second half.

"They have to stand up today and beat a decent Chile team."

Spanish football journalist Graham Hunter speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "Spain have played throughout this three-tournament-winning run with great technique but also with great intelligence. That dissipated a little bit against Netherlands.

"The mood after that defeat was ghostly. I was with Spain at the World Cup four years go and after losing to Switzerland they were difficult to be around. On the plane back to Salvador it looked to me like the defeat had been too easily digested.

"But on Sunday in training the noise, the intensity and the laughter was back. They are not sitting crying into their cava. It felt quicker and sharper and I would say it was the best training session they have had since the end of the season."

The aftermath of Spain's mauling by the Dutch last week saw plenty of 'Spain are done', 'Tiki-taka is dead' style headlines.

But can this side be a force once more?

Their squad is arguably the strongest at the whole tournament, but can they still cut it at the very highest level?

We want your reports on the Spain side. What do they need to change, are the changes tonight enough?

How far can they still go, who needs to be in, who should be out?

"I'm tipping Chile to win. They are my underdogs for the tournament actually. They have quick players up front and I do worry for Spain. I think the old guard may be on the way out."

Claims that reigning World Cup holders Spain are no longer the force they were have been exaggerated, says midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The reigning World and European champions are keen to atone for their 5-1 humiliation by the Netherlands.

The 32-year-old Real Madrid player said: "What you've heard in the press seems a little exaggerated to me.

"You cannot consider that this generation is finished. On the contrary, we are still alive."

Alonso, who has won 110 caps for Spain, added: "We want to demonstrate that and we have a perfect opportunity to do so. We still have a lot of things to say and we can still compete."

There's no easy way of taking the positives from a 5-1 thrashing.

But we shouldn't forget that Spain were on top for the opening 40-odd minutes against the Netherlands last Friday, and had David Silva put them 2-0 up with a great chance just before Robin van Persie's stunning equaliser, then it could have been very different.

The second half was a horrorshow but the Spanish still had 57% of the possession. It's converting that possession into chances that is the key.

It was the shock result of the opening round of World Cup games.

Holders Spain, dominant across Europe and the World for the past six years, were comprehensively taken apart by a vicious counter-attacking Netherlands side.

We saw an incredible 5-1 scoreline in Salvador, and the manner of Spain's performance in the second half was deeply worrying for their chances in the competition.

    Nobody expects the Spanish capitulation.

But they are not dead and buried just yet. Victory in Rio this evening and their chances could be back on track.

  14. Team Newspublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 18 June 2014

Confirmed - Spain drop midfielder Xavi and defender Gerard Pique, as Pedro and Javi Martinez start.

Spain: Casillas; Azpilicueta, Ramos, Martinez, Alba; Alonso, Busquets; Pedro, Silva, Iniesta; Costa

Chile: Bravo, Mena, Isla, Silva, Sanchez, Vidal, Vargas, Medel, Jara, Aranguiz, Dias

BBC Sport's David Ornstein in Rio

"Reports swirling round the Maracana media centre suggest Spain boss Vincente del Bosque has dropped Xavi and Gerard Pique.

"If true, the Xavi news would be particularly significant because he has not only been Spain's midfield general for so long, but he symbolises the style and identity that has underpinned this generation and seen them win three major titles in a row. At 34, though, the Barcelona star's powers are diminishing, he endured arguably the worst season of his career and was uncharacteristically poor against Netherlands last time out.

"Pique would be less of a surprise - he had made just one appearances since 1 April before facing the Dutch and was given the run-around, which wouldn't bode well against the pacy Chileans."

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has to decide whether or not to drop Iker Casillas and play Pepe Reina in goal.

Fellow keeper David De Gea has a buttock muscle injury, while Pedro and Javi Martinez could come into the starting line-up.

Chile's key midfielder Arturo Vidal came through an hour of the win over Australia unscathed on his first start since undergoing knee surgery in May.

Charles Aranguiz is one booking away from a ban.
