Arturo Vidal goes into the book for a trip in midfield, but Spain are getting on with it very quickly. They need goals, and that's a chance!
They go more direct, David Silva flicks it on and Diego Costa hits the shot into the side-netting with his left foot.

Jane: The demise of Spain can be summed up in two words: No Puyol.
Matthew Tilbury:, external Spain's defenders just watching the ball go past them. Absolute statuesque defending.
Barry Goudie:, external Spain can't go through and expect to win with the strikers they have. Costa and Torres just don't cut the mustard.
Mark Kemsley:, external Spain in deep trouble here. Have the players to turn this around though.

Chance for Spain now! Diego Costa with some classic centre-forward play, bringing the ball down and teeing up Xabi Alonso 20 yards out but he leans back and mullers it over the crossbar.
Goals in this, there's got to be...
Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis

"Spain have looked comfortable, but a bad pass from Xabi Alonso gives it away and it's poor defending. The two centre-backs are out of position, Cesar Azpilicueta has to come across but Eduardo Vargas has done brilliantly to take it past Iker Casillas and slip the ball in.
"This was a test for Spain before kick-off, well it's a bigger test now. The goal will suit Chile. They can take their time now and bring Spain onto them. There will be a lot of space for them to exploit going forward."

"It was a brilliant move but sloppy from Xabi Alonso as he gave the ball away. It was a calm finish from Eduardo Vargas. Midfielders can snatch at a chance but to have the awareness to see Vargas, it was great from Charles Aranguiz."

A big 70 minutes on the cards here!
Image source, AFPA great goal! Alexis Sanchez is involved on the right, he works the ball inside to Charles Aranguiz, who brilliantly squares it when a shot was on to Eduardo Vargas, who sidesteps Iker Casillas before toeing it home.
There were shades of Teddy Sheringham's lay-off to Alan Shearer in 1996 there...

"The Chileans are so open - the two wide centre-backs are playing so wide that they leave just the one defender in the middle. The Spanish have got in some really good positions but the final pass just hasn't been good enough. If they do get that final ball right they will be in business."
It will be interesting to see how much of a difference Diego Costa will make to Chelsea next season.

"It was overplaying from Chile and Spain winning the ball back. I thought Costa could have taken the shot early. Costa doesn't quite look like he's got the sharpness. He might prove us wrong but I thought Vicente Del Bosque would look at his other options."
Image source, AFPSpain should be ahead! They win the ball back well in a dangerous area, Diego Costa takes it on but hesitates and his shot is charged down, the ball then comes back to Xabi Alonso in the middle but his shot is well saved by Claudio Bravo.
Much more encouraging from the holders. They've turned the tempo right up, from ballad to punk.

Spain now settling into their familiar rhythm, this is better. David Silva is starting to look dangerous in the hole.

"Chile don't have much height and even though they're not the tallest from set-plays Spain will have to look at that as a real avenue for them and Xabi Alonso's delivery will have to be a lot better.
"Both teams are trying to press quite high. The intent is there from both sides to win the game."
Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis

"It's been a very lively opening, it looks like this is going to be a very open game. The Spain full-backs are pushing up high and there is space behind them for Chile to exploit.
"It will be interesting to see how the American referee copes as well. No disrespect to Major League Soccer but this is a massive step up. Hopefully he will let the game run and let the players play."
Barry Wiggett:, external It's like the tortoise and the hare between Spain and Chile but we know how that race ended.
James Somerfield:, external I think Spain will bounce back 3-0. Should see a big reaction & they'll show that their class will get them through.

Spain have had a sluggish start but one magic spell of tiki-taka rolls back the clock as they slice through the Chile midfield. Andres Iniesta is fouled and from Xabi Alonso's free-kick Sergio Ramos is close to a header, goalkeeper Claudio Bravo punches it away.
