  1. Manager reactionpublished at 22:10 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England manager Roy Hodgson: "I don't think anyone let me down, the team down, or the country down.

"We conceded two goals, but didn't concede many other chances at all. I thought we had a lot more possession but they stood firm and we couldn't score."

A major sadness indeed Roy. He could still take his side through though, he just needs some help from his mates in Italy.

England manager Roy Hodgson: "We have done well enough to get back in the game, could go on to win the game with our dominance but of course they scored the goal.

"I am bitterly disappointed. We came with such high hopes and were not able to deliver, a major sadness."

England defender Phil Jagielka talking to ITV:

"It is gutting. We played so well in spells but things didn't go our way. Steve Gerrard flicked the ball on, Suarez was onside and you hope he mis-hits one but he finds the target and he wins the game.

"It is a similar story to Italy, we played pretty well but not good enough. We are very disappointed as defenders, that is the last thing you want to see from a punt down the field. Everyone is absolutely devastated in there.

"We had them on the back foot after we scored. There is a small chance still. We have to go out there against Costa Rica and put in a good performance and come away with something."

Simon, Harrogate: England out of the World Cup. Blessing. Now I can sit back and watch some real world class footy without all the stress.

Paul F, London: The only surprise for me is that people are surprised at England's exit. It's the worst England team ever to go to a tournament, the back four is atrocious.

"I don't know what it is but we seem to have a fear factor, we can't enjoy our football. I know we have come here with an inexperienced side but in two years' time we will be saying the same thing again. It never seems to change.

"When Uruguay pressed us today we were awful, we were petrified, Uruguay wanted it in any area, the teams we play seem to know how to win matches and we don't."

"Not good enough from England, it's the same old things we talked about in South Africa four years ago - a lack of composure on the ball, people not accepting the ball when they are marked, and defensively not good enough.

"The second goal was shocking, yes it was a flick-on by Steven Gerrard ,he could do little about it, but the back three were all over the shop, no defensive shape and organisation at all."

Joe Wedgwood:, external Some positive moments but lack of world class players acutely evident so far in Brazil. Rooney brilliant but just not enough.

Craig Dunbar:, external Good scenes from Uruguay showing passion celebrating at the end, shame England didn't show any all game.

  15. CAN ENGLAND STILL QUALIFY?published at 21:57 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Yes they can. Just about.

They need Italy to beat Costa Rica on Friday, and then England must overcome Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope Italy simultaneously defeat Uruguay.

If level, goal difference splits teams, then goals scored, finally results and goals in games involving the teams concerned.

"Uruguay deserved to win. England had a little spell in the second half but overall there can be little argument. They came here with with a young inexperienced side and that showed in the two games, they have been beaten by experience.

"Barring a miracle they will be going home. In both games they have been second best."

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty in Sao Paulo

"England have been unpicked by a world-class striker. Luis Suarez possessed the brilliance and ruthlessness Roy Hodgson's side never had - and England could not reproduce what they offered up against Italy. A draw between Italy and Costa Rica tomorrow and England are out of the World Cup."
