"Uruguay have come off the pace. They have worked very hard for an hour and now England are all over them.

"No doubt that substitution is a defensive move from Uruguay because they are getting overrun. They will take a point."

"Suddenly the momentum is with England - and their supporters know it. Glen Johnson had not been having the best of games but great credit to him there as he served up Wayne Rooney's first goal at a World Cup on a plate."

Daniel Sturridge now hits the target with a low shot which Fernando Muslera turns away. England suddenly look very dangerous and Uruguay's gameplan of containment is up in the air.

"You could see the relief on Wayne Rooney's face. He has had our best moments of the game and he deserved that goal. We have been the better team in this game and we have to go on and win it. It is there for us. What I love about this England performance is the positive substitutions. It shows we are going to go and attack."

"England have been very positive with the substitutions and it has paid off. First off you have to give credit to Daniel Sturridge for his wonderful play on the right. Glen Johnson drives towards the box and Wayne Rooney is the one who reacts for a simple tap-in."

That's Wayne Rooney's 40th England goal. And probably his most significant in a decade.

England want a penalty as Daniel Sturridge goes to ground but there's nothing wrong with that. Can England win this?

"Uruguay have played well as a team. They have worked hard, got their reward with the goal and probably should have killed the game off by now."

"I'd like to see a change in formation now. I think Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge should go up top, Ross Barkley in behind, Jordan Henderson on the left and Adam Lallana on the right with Steven Gerrard in a holding role.

"As England are attacking, Uruguay are dropping deeper and deeper and there is no set pattern to England's play, they have got to try something different."

  13. Are England going out?published at 21:29 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England fans do not despair. Even in defeat to Uruguay tonight, qualification is possible.

There are presently 81 different permutations for Group D.

Should England lose to Uruguay in Sao Paulo, they will need Italy to beat Costa Rica on Friday.

Then England must overcome Costa Rica next Tuesday and hope Italy simultaneously defeat Uruguay.

If level, goal difference splits teams, then goals scored, finally results and goals in games involving the teams concerned.

Should England draw tonight, they would finish level with Uruguay at worst with victory against a Costa Rican side beaten by Italy.

If England win, a draw against Costa Rica could be enough, depending on goal difference.

It's petering out into a scrappy last 20 minutes now, Uruguay taking all the time they can at every available opportunity. And who can blame them?

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England have had 63% of possession in this half, Uruguay playing a risky game, just sitting back and soaking it up. Ross Barkley works the ball out wide neatly but again there's no real quality on the ball in.

Adam Lallana on for Danny Welbeck. Can he add that impetus?

Robert Jarrett: Luis Suarez - one chance, one goal. Wayne Rooney - three good chances this game, nothing. One good chance v Italy, nothing. That is the difference between world class and good club players.

Sean Castle:, external Hodgson's mistake is not learning who was ineffective in the opener. Bring on the players with more spirit and less fear.

Richard:, external On comes the new English messiah. Despite only having half a good season, he's suddenly the great England hope.
