Stuart Reid:, external Can we lay off Wayne Rooney now and ask why Gerrard is carried as a passenger by this team? No energy to press the opposition.

"Lethargic, listless, subdued - a campaign that finished as it started, in bitter disappointment."

That was Phil McNulty's assessment of England's World Cup four years ago. How times change eh?

"I enjoyed watching Liverpool in the Premier League, you get away with playing like that there but not in international football. The opposition will have energy, be solid and hit them on the break. When you play the Premier League it is like playing basketball, you get millions of chances. At this level it doesn't work like that."

"If you're going to defend like then you have got no chance. There was a complete naivety about the defending for the second goal - they don't go in a line and didn't follow the runner.

"I know there was some politics involved but if John Terry had played, that second goal would not have been conceded. There are not enough leaders but you can't make them, they're either there or not. Ultimately there was a lack of quality and a lack of concentration."

"The big problem for England is the Premier League. We bang a drum about what we have. We hype all our players up massively.

"We don't know how to win games, it is not about picking your best players, it the right balance. Other countries have good players but put them on the bench. How do you win matches, start from the back and then you get organised. It is not about the best players. We never, ever, ever learn."

No team has ever lost their opening two games at the World Cup and advanced from the group. But that's still an option for England.

Italy must beat Costa Rica on Friday and then beat Uruguay next Tuesday. And if they do, England will be through with a win against Costa Rica.

If England get through by just beating Costa Rica it would be an extraordinarily fortunate route to the last 16.

    But it could happen.

larry davis:, external We moan about not playing young players and when we do we moan about no experience. We don't have enough English players.

Chris Gilbert:, external We need some bright young defenders (particularly centre backs) coming through fast. Cahill and Jagielka were awful.

SkyBlueJake:, external England should have learnt from S.Africa: current form of players is a better guide than experience and maturity.

    Former England international Danny Mills

"Liverpool this season have been fantastic going forward, but why did they lose the Premier League? Bad defending.

"When I played for England, we had Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell. Steve McClaren, the then-manager, drilled us every day for 40 minutes. We were good defensively as a unit but we worked tirelessly.

"I look at the England back four there and wonder if they have worked together? Since the friendly against Peru there have been defensive issues in every match that have not been addressed. The simple things have cost England dear in both games."

Ross Evans:, external I feel so sorry for Hodgson. It's not his fault!! He picked the best squad he could've and it isn't good enough.

Ben Harris:, external Hold our heads high! I can't fault Wayne Rooney, he played out of his skin tonight!!!!

Rob Meech:, external Ironically Rooney was our best player tonight but everyone else was below-par. World-class finishing was the difference.

More from England manager Roy Hodgson, talking to ITV: "We are more than disappointed, we believed we could do enough in this game to get a result. Having worked so hard to counter the first goal, I fully believed we would win the game or at least draw the game. We had been in control for such a long period of time.

"To concede the goal is an unbelievable blow. It is a goal we don't expect to concede, we deal with them. We dealt with the Uruguayan attack well for long spells but came across a very strong defensive unit ourselves.

"Luis Suarez scored the two goals. The first goal was exceptionally good, top, top class. The second one he was a bit fortunate to get himself free but when he did he made literally no mistake.

"They had been nowhere near our goal, it doesn't matter how many times you get near their goal though it is how many times you put it in the back of the net and on both occasions we haven't done it enough."

    Former England midfielder Danny Murphy

"The tempo of the passing only got quicker when we were losing. What annoys me is that we can play quicker and faster, we see it week in, week out in the Premier League.

"But we don't seem to start that way, it's as if we have fear. Chile were the perfect example of what we can do, because we have got the players to do it."

  16. Vote Timepublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England manager Roy Hodgson: "We played against a strong side defensively and maybe they restricted spaces a bit better.

"Everyone tried very hard and the mood is very low. It is hard to know what to say."

"When England came out in the second half we seemed to play with a passion that we hadn't shown in the first game against Italy or the first half and you wonder why we didn't start with that.

"Then we get the goal back and you're thinking we could win it but it was comical defending for the second Uruguay goal. One pass, one kick and a flick and you concede. There is a real lack of quality."
