"England's young players will definitely learn from this experience. The future is definitely bright for England. They should aim to win Euro 2016 in France.

"I won't be happy if they do, but I think they can compete in two years' time. They are young but they should still have Wayne Rooney around."

"They should give Roy Hodgson another two years. He's embraced the younger players and taken a chance there. There are two or three players who could become great - not necessarily a certainty.

"Three or four years ago we thought Chris Smalling and Phil Jones would be the cornerstone of the English defence, they haven't gone on. Give him another two or three years and then bring someone fresh and new in to do something different."

"The final credits cannot start rolling as England may yet survive. Stranger things have happened in football but Roy Hodgson and his players were struggling to think of them as they drove off into the night and the traffic of the Southern Hemisphere's largest city last night."

"Any other player in the world in Luis Suarez's position, where you've had a knee operation, you've scored, would be off after 70 minutes.

"Suarez was stamping on the ground coming out of the tunnel at half-time testing the knee but he played on. Fantastic player."

England manager Roy Hodgson insists he will not resign, despite his side facing World Cup elimination.

Luis Suarez's double for Uruguay condemned England to their second successive defeat in Group D following an opening loss to Italy.

"I don't have any intention to resign," said Hodgson, 66. "I've been really happy with the way the players have responded to the work we've done."

"Basically it was a defensive horror show. When you have a flat back four you have a bit of cover, good communication and it's exceptionally difficult to score. Communication in the two matches has been abysmal and they've paid the ultimate price for it.

"You come to the basics and fundamentals and it was just beyond belief what was going on. Joe Hart didn't have a lot of saves to make but there was panic in that England defence many times."

"I don't think England played badly against Uruguay. They were in the game at 1-1 with five minutes to go, still in the driving seat. But to concede a goal the way they conceded that second goal at the end of the game, there was no communication. It was just a long ball they had to deal with."

England captain Steven Gerrard admitted that the Three Lions are "clutching at straws" by banking on Italy to get them out of a hole at the World Cup. But clutch they will.

"Italy are a fantastic team and capable of winning both games but we're clutching at straws," he said.

"The position we're in is the position we didn't want to be in coming into the tournament, relying on other people's results. It's very difficult at the moment.

"We need to be professional, keep fighting and pray for that scoreline to go for us."

"The big news for Italy is that Gianluigi Buffon comes back in to captain the side after injury to play in what will be his fourth World Cup. The goalkeeper is only the fifth Italian in history to play in four World Cups joining Gianni Rivera, Giuseppe Bergomi, Paolo Maldini and Fabio Cannavaro.

"The Juventus legend was the first man off the team coach when it arrived a little more than an hour ago and looks as though he means business. Mario Balotelli arrived wearing ubiquitous black cap and huge headphones. The players will be out to warm up shortly."

Most Brazilian newspapers have got pictures of a grinning Luis Suarez on their front page today but sports paper 'Lance!' has used England's latest defeat as an excuse for a pastiche of the cover of The Beatles' classic 'Abbey Road'.
