BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty in Belo Horizonte

"England manager Roy Hodgson claims he has been plunged into "a realm of despair you don't know is even possible" by their World Cup elimination after only two games.

"He needs to pull himself and his players out of it quickly against Costa Rica here in Belo Horizonte, where conditions are perfect.

"The game may be meaningless in World Cup terms but if the manner of England's exit is a black mark on Hodgson's CV, to return home without a win means a black border would be put around this campaign in Brazil."

  9. The Scot who stunned Englandpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Ed McIlvenny holds a place in World Cup folklore, but you will not find the Scot listed among the greats of the game.

A journeyman footballer, his moment of glory came in a match English football would rather forget.

McIlvenny captained the United States as they produced one of the biggest World Cup shocks in history - beating England 1-0 in Belo Horizonte at the 1950 finals.

As it stands, that is England's worst World Cup defeat in the city. Could it get worse today?

Read more about McIlvenny's marvellous story on the BBC Sport website.

Only twice before had an England side failed to negotiate the group stage of a World Cup, in 1950 and 1958.

The disaster of 1950 was England being beaten by the United States in a huge upset - a match played in Belo Horizonte.

Where do England take on Costa Rica this afternoon? You guessed it - Belo Horizonte...

Fulham midfielder Scott Parker speaking to BBC London 94.9:

"I think it has been a fantastic World Cup but obviously it has been disappointing for England. Having said that I think we are very, very close to having a good team and we need to let the people in charge carry on developing and sticking to their plan. I think over time this could be a very good team.

"Obviously there's a lot of negativity because we have gone out but I can still see there are some positives to take."

On Roy Hodgson's future: "I think if you give a man a job then you have to give him the time to see it through. Roy has a plan and it is a process that takes time.

"Spain developed over years and years and they stuck with it and were committed to it. We need to do that."

Zheer T. Hama on Facebook:, external The only problem with English players is that they all play in premier league and they are not aware of other clubs's style of playing. So they must be transferred to other non-English clubs to learn how other teams play.

Michael Mollison:, external The media and the hype needs to change.

Barry Callaghan:, external In my opinion the loss of the national team has everything to do with the strength of the Premier league. If a young player doesn't get the chance to develop by playing week in week out the national squad will never get better. Look at the Dutch team most of the young players play every week for their club.

There is at least one England fan cheering on Costa Rica this afternoon.

Scott Jardine, from Worthing, is in line for a £3,000 windfall after sticking a £5 bet on Costa Rica winning all three of their group matches at the start of the tournament at odds of 600-1.

The 41-year-old is believed to be the only person in England to bet on a hat-trick of wins for the rank outsiders.

He said he "didn't fancy England at all" and thought the Central Americans would better suit the conditions.

Scott, how are you fixed to take the England job...?
