Belo Horizonte translates as 'beautiful view' and the location of the Estadio Mineirao is stunning.

What a lovely backdrop for such a meaningless fixture. If this is the only World Cup match Ben Foster, Luke Shaw, Phil Jones or Chris Smalling ever play, at least it's a beauty

This is the fourth game to be played at this venue. Spectators have seen Colombia 3-0 Greece, Belgium 2-1 Algeria and Argentina 1-0 Iran so far.

    What will England serve up?

A picture tells a thousand words.

Roy Hodgson, aviators on, walks out on to the Belo Horizonte pitch, totally alone. Like a tourist who has taken the wrong turn on his way to the gift shop.

He looks bemused as the 'wire' camera circles his head. Is this to be his final World Cup match?

    Former England defender Phil Neville
    BBC pundit

"In the past there has always been a scapegoat when England have gone out. I have been one myself, when I gave away a penalty against Romania that meant we were eliminated from Euro 2000.

"But there is no individual to blame this time and that is a good thing. England have fallen short as a team and it is devastating that we are out, but we need to take the positives away from Brazil."

This will be the first ever meeting between Costa Rica and England. If Costa Rica avoid defeat, they will finish as the top team in Group D.

The Ticos have scored in all seven of their previous World Cup meetings with teams from Europe, while England have not lost all three group games at a major tournament since the 1988 European Championships.

"England boss Roy Hodgson said he'd been plunged into "a realm of despair" by World Cup exit. Wonder can some young blood lift him out of it?"

  9. Postpublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

What's to blame for England's early exit?

The number of young players with the hunger and desire to play for England is diminishing because of the money in the game, says captain Steven Gerrard.

When asked if football was guilty of turning teenagers into millionaires too soon, Gerrard told BBC Sport: "It has an impact on certain individuals.

"For those who want money, fame and everything that comes with football, of course it will have an effect.

"If you have the right mentality and the right character, you do things right and work as hard as you can to become the best player you can, but we need more of those players."

England may have disappointed but are the "mother of football" and will be determined not to leave the World Cup without a point, says Costa Rica manager Jorge Luis Pinto.

"England must take some pride out of Brazil," said 61-year-old Pinto, whose side are ranked 28th in the world.

"The mother of football cannot leave without points and that makes it very complex."

A quick recap on how it all came to this then.

England were beaten 2-1 by Italy in Manaus, Daniel Sturridge's equaliser cancelled out by Mario Balotelli's match-winning header.

And then Uruguay also won by the odd goal in three, Luis Suarez taking advantage of some dozy defending in the last few minutes to hammer home his second of the game and render Wayne Rooney's first World Cup goal a statistical sideshow.

Any last chance Roy Hodgson had of sticking around were then extinguished when today's opponents Costa Rica went and beat Italy.

Out before they had finished their malaria tablets. As bad as it gets...?

If you heard it once, you heard it a thousand times in the build up to the World Cup.

There were no expectations of England at the tournament. It was a young, inexperienced side with an average back four and no standout players.

But two weeks on, England's narrow defeats to two sides ranked ahead of them in the Fifa rankings has inevitably led to calls to sack the manager, get more youngsters playing, axe the captain, hold another 'root and branch' review and demand apologies from every member of the squad.

But what can you really take from the tournament?

Think hard, as I want one positive and one negative - only one mind - to take from England's World Cup.

There's a distinct feel of 'fifth Test of the Ashes' about this game.

Roy Hodgson has made sweeping changes to the team, there are problems at both ends of the pitch, confidence is through the floor and all the team can think about is getting on the plane back to Luton.

Andrew Flintoff and Alastair Cook know all about leading England through a humiliating whitewash abroad in recent years. Will Roy Hodgson and Steven Gerrard share that pain by the end of tonight?

We're not entirely sure where the phrase 'dead rubber' emanates from, but if you are in any doubt it means a sporting match which has nothing riding on it.

Strictly speaking, Costa Rica can win Group D, but England have never had nothing to play for in a World Cup match before...

When Roy Hodgson and his men jetted off for Brazil late last month, making World Cup history will have been high on their list of ambitions.

Well, congratulations Roy and co - you've done it!

The England class of 2014 have indeed made history, as they prepare for their first ever 'dead rubber' game in the group stages.

There is absolutely nothing riding on this game for England. Win 5-0, lose 6-0, it makes absolutely no difference.

There is only pride to play for. Sort of. Would England fans be proud of beating Costa Rica? They may have to be. At best...

England's two defeats mean they will proceed no further. Their final opponents, Costa Rica, will win the group with a point or better from the match in Belo Horizonte.

Italy need a point to qualify, while Uruguay must beat Cesare Prandelli's side to progress.

If Costa Rica lose to England, then a win in the other match would see the victors win the group if their goal difference or goals scored is better than Costa Rica's.

Should Costa Rica end with six points and are level on goal difference or goals scored with either of the other two sides, their better head-to-head with Uruguay and Italy - whom they beat 3-1 and 1-0 respectively - would see the Central Americans top the group.
