Karim Benzema sees that shiny golden boot in his mind as he is served up a delicious chance on a plate by strike partner Olivier Giroud. But the France striker cannot beat Ecuador keeper Alexander Dominguez with a side-footer. Still hope, albeit, very slim for the 10-man Ecuadorians.

To paraphrase 1980s power-ballad rockers Journey, Ecuador aren't stopping believing yet. Substitute Alex Ibarra shows a quick burst of pace to break down the right, but his arrowed shot is palmed away by Hugo Lloris. End to end stuff now in the Maracana.

Almost a consolation for Honduras, Jerry Bengtson forcing Diego Benaglio into a smart stop.

AKarim:, external Could both European teams qualify from group E? This will be a first, mainly been dominated by South American teams so far.

    Group E

Fifteen minutes for either Ecuador to score twice and sneak above Switzerland on goals scored. Or Honduras to score four and France get a late winner. I've more chance of playing in Sao Paulo than those two sides next week.

Surely, surely! No. France miss a golden chance which would have sent the Ecuadorians packing along with their Latin American mates from Honduras. Paul Pogba is given acres of space at the back stick but can only nod back across goal and out for a goal-kick.

"That is quite brilliant. Brilliant pass from Rodriguez, great movement from Drmic and a composed, good finish by Shaqiri. A brilliant back to front goal."

Oh Honduras! Kevin Kilbane called it perfectly - they have been punished. Switzerland go route one as a big lump forward finds Josip Drmic, who centres for Xherdan Shaqiri to convert. That's the second hat-trick in the 2014 World Cup and the 50th in total.

Still Honduras knock on the Swiss door. Well, more of a gentle tap. Honduras substitute Jerry Palacios lurks with intent at the far post, busting a gut to get on end of Juan Carlos Garcia's cross, but Fabian Schaer bundles clear.

"I don't know about you but any minute now I think we're going to see France score. They are wearing Ecuador down. France are quicker in their movement off the ball and are playing better quality balls into the box."

France look anything but potential world champions tonight. Karim Benzema has been as quiet as a doormouse, but sees a low effort deflected wide. Olivier Giroud is limbering up on the touchline - is Benzema's time up? Nope. It is Blaise Matuidi's number which flashes up on the electronic board.

Palacios goes down in the box

"That is a clear penalty. The assistant referee has to help the official there. That is a really poor decision. Honduras have really caused problems this half.

"Honduras can't afford to keep missing chances. Switzerland have a lot of attacking options but at the back they can be exposed."

  15. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Switzerland wake up briefly after those two Honduras chances for Jerry Bengtson. Honduras have been much improved, but their World Cup hopes are going up in smoke if they don't find three goals from somewhere.

Then Honduras midfielder Jerry Palacios reckons he deserves a penalty to try to get one of them, going tumbling in the box as he bears down on the Swiss goal. Shake of the head from referee Nestor Pitana tells you exactly what he thinks. No penalty.

"Stunned silence from the Ecuador fans, gasps from everybody else, as Valencia is given his marching orders. Referee Noumandiez Doue took his time over that, clearly communicating with his assistants and perhaps the fourth official, but appeared to come to the correct decision.

"The Manchester United winger jogged down the tunnel without any complaints. Ecuador need to win this match to reach the last 16 - they're up against it now."

  18. Postpublished at 22:16 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

What on Earth has happened to Ecuador? They look miles better with just 10 men. Jefferson Montero breaks clear down the left but can't pick out a yellow shirt in the French box.

  19. Postpublished at 22:14 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

The 10 men of Ecuador almost take a shock lead. They only need a 1-0 victory, if Switzerland win by a two-goal margin, to go through. But Cristhian Noboa slips when well-placed and slices wide. Their best chance of the game could just have disappeared down the drain.
