  3. It was four years ago today...published at 20:43 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Exactly four years ago, Switzerland and Honduras ground out a 0-0 draw in their final 2010 World Cup group game, ensuring they finished third and fourth respectively in the table.

Now they find themselves occupying those same positions ahead of this game, but with the added bait of a last-16 spot being up for grabs.

"We will win this time, it is that simple," said Hitzfeld. "I am convinced that we have a lot more potential now in our offence. We have scored four goals in this World Cup already. So I am confident that we can score goals against Honduras, too."

    Ottmar HitzfeldImage source, Getty Images

His hair might be a little greyer. His body might be a little frailer. But the steeliness of his eyes tell a different story. Ottmar Hitzfeld is not ready to retire to his garden and lovingly water the fuchsia just yet - he wants at least another 90 minutes after tonight.

The legendary Switzerland coach has been there, done it and got the T-shirt. Nineteen major trophies as a club manager and one of only five coaches to win the European Cup with two teams. Oh, and those teams were Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

But is it all going to be over soon for the 65-year-old. In fact, it could all be over tonight. For he is packing his coaching bibs and stopwatch away for the final time when he retires this summer after 31 years of management.

  6. Suarez wants bite at last-16published at 20:35 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

While one Luis Suarez is currently dominating the news agenda, another Luis Suarez is aiming to create a few headlines for himself tonight. Don't expect the Honduras coach to have an (alleged) nibble on the shoulder of Swiss counterpart Ottmar Hitzfeld, but do expect some more aggression from his combative players.

Luis Fernando Suarez is hoping to see the back pages of the Honduran newspapers - and maybe a few column inches elsewhere across the world - dedicated to his team reaching the last-16 of the World Cup.

"It's one thing to say that and another thing to do it on the pitch. So yes we will be aggressive, but we have to defend," he says.

Enner Valencia scored both goals as Ecuador kept themselves in the World Cup - and shoved Honduras closer to an early exit.

Carlo Costly lashed in a low 20-yard shot to put Honduras ahead on 31 minutes, before Ecuador equalised when a deflected cross fell for Valencia to slot home.

Valenica nodded in at the far post to give his side the lead and, despite pressing for an equaliser, Honduras could not avoid losing both group games.

France all but secured a place in the last 16 as three first-half goals helped them to an easy win over Switzerland.

Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock with a stunning header before Blaise Matuidi blasted in the second 66 seconds later.

Karim Benzema had a penalty saved but Mathieu Valbuena added a third for the 1998 World Cup winners.

Goals by Benzema and Moussa Sissoko made it 5-0 after the break, before Blerim Dzemaili and Granit Xhaka reduced the arrears in a dramatic game.

Man-of-the-moment Karim Benzema scored twice as France became the first team to benefit from goalline technology at a World Cup in their victory over 10-man Honduras.

The GoalControl tool was called into action in the 48th-minute, ruling keeper Noel Valladares nudged Benzema's shot over the line.

The Real Madrid forward gave France the lead from the spot before adding a late third with a vicious strike from a tight angle.

Talking of vicious, Honduras were widely-criticised for their combative tactics and were reduced to 10 men after Wilson Palacios saw red.

Group E didn't kick off until day five of the World Cup - but it didn't mind turning up to the party armed with goals in one hand and drama in the other.

Substitute Haris Seferovic scored in the third minute of stoppage time as Switzerland fought back to earn a dramatic win over Ecuador.

Fellow substitute Admir Mehmedi headed Switzerland level after Enner Valencia had given Ecuador a half-time lead.

    Enner Valencia

How could I forget to mention Monsieur Lineker among that roll call of World Cup top scorers? Shameful. The Match of the Day presenter knows a thing or two about decent strikers, and he has been impressed by this man - Ecuador striker Enner Valencia. The 24-year-old, who plays in Mexico with Pachuca, has scored three goals in his two matches, meaning he has now bagged in each of his last six internationals.

While France's reputation as a world footballing force is seemingly on its way back, striker Karim Benzema is a man who is seeking personal redemption. The Real Madrid forward struggled for club and country at the start of last season, being whistled at the Bernabeu and hounded by the French media after the first-leg play-off defeat by Ukraine.

Now he looks a good bet to challenge Neymar for the Golden Boot crown. The winner will join a glittering roll-call which includes the likes of Ronaldo, Eusebio, Gerd Muller and, er, Oleg Salenko.

"There's a fairly even split of France and Ecuador fans outside the Maracana and while they don't appear to be creating one of the World Cup's more boisterous atmospheres, there's a jovial feel about the place as both teams look to secure a place in in last 16.

"The supporters and journalists I've spoken to feel this could be a tale of two strikers - Karim Benzema of France and Ecuador's Enner Valencia, both men having already scored three goals in the tournament."

  18. Who can qualify from Group E?published at 20:04 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

....but we do have this handy explainer. Here's what each side has to do (as a bare minimum):

    Group E

France: Need a draw to secure their last-16 place and qualify as group winners.

Ecuador: Certain of qualification if they match or better a Switzerland win or draw (barring a two-goal swing).

Switzerland: Through if they better Ecuador's result.

Honduras: Must beat Switzerland and hope Ecuador lose, coupled with a four-goal swing, to advance.

That's the summary of what the Group E contenders have to do, but if you want to know all the nitty-gritty then have a gander at our permutations piece. Stun your mates with that in-depth knowledge and you'll have the pub nickname of 'Motty' for life.

  19. Who can qualify from Group E?published at 20:02 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Permutations have been notoriously difficult for football managers and players to get their heads around - and understandably so.

Back in the Premier League's 1995-96 season, former Manchester City boss Alan Ball famously told his players to run down the clock in their final fixture as a home draw would see them avoid relegation. They drew 2-2 against Liverpool - and went down. How Bally wished he had Carol Vorderman in the dug-out.

Unfortunately we don't have Vorderman sat in the BBC Sport office either....

The atmosphere is building beautifully in Brazil's footballing cathedral - the Maracana. There's plenty of colour already inside the cavernous bowl, with thousands of French and Ecuadorian fans decked out in fancy dress as the players survey the scene. It's all got too much already for one Ecuadorian fan though - he seems to be having 40 winks in the stand. Must have been a big night in Copacabana...
