Jerry Bengston was Honduras's goal hero during the 2012 Olympics and boy do they need his scoring instincts now. Twice he goes close to halving the gap in a matter of seconds. The second is cleared off the line by Ricardo Rodriguez. Great defending.

  2. RED CARDpublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Oh dear. Ecuador's captain and talisman Antonio Valencia is shamed by a reckless tackle on Lucas Digne. Studs up in the tackle and after deliberation between the officials, the Manchester United winger is dismissed. Early bath time.

Instincts of a cat from keeper Alexander Dominguez saves Ecuador. Antoine Griezmann ghosts into the penalty area to turn Bacary Sagna's cross towards the Ecuadorian net. Dominguez acrobatically turns the ball on to the post and the South Americans survive.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 22:03 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Honduras need a miracle - can Marvin Chavez provide it? They hope so. The Chivas USA midfielder is called from the bench to replace Wigan's Roger Espinoza.

    David Ornstein
    BBC Sport at the Maracana

"You know the French are a happy camp when their fans sing La Marseillaise during the match. Regular visitors to Stade de France will tell you what a rare occurrence that's been in recent years, but it happened during the first 45 minutes here because Les Blues are on their way to the last 16 and look strong enough to launch a genuine bid for the title."

    Brad Friedel
Tottenham and former USA goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live

"France haven't found the net but they won't be too concerned. They are giving some other players minutes under their belt which will enhance the spirit within the squad. If Ecuador do score then I'm sure France will move up a gear. Ecuador are playing so deep in the final third."

  9. HALF-TIMEpublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

    Former England captain Alan Shearer
    MOTD analyst

"It's been a very disappointing first half. Ecuador have had one opportunity and other than that they have offered very little. France have played it like a friendly, taking extra touches on the ball when in possession."

Mark Stockwell:, external Ecuador need to perk up, bit of a dull game. I think France will overpower them eventually.

"There has been no real flow to this game. Ecuador have sat deep and tried to counter-attack, while France have failed to produce the quality in the final third."

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 21:49 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Two short, sharp shrills of the referee's whistle - one in Manaus and one in Rio - mean it is half-time in both final Group E games. France and Switzerland are 45 minutes away from reaching the last-16.

  13. Postpublished at 21:47 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

And it was almost a third for the Swiss on the stroke of half-time. Josip Drmic is just beaten to a long ball in a foot-race with Honduran keeper Noel Valladares.

  14. Postpublished at 21:46 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Switzerland produces many fine things - chocolate, watches, talented tennis players. But what about cigars? Their footballers can just about kick back with a Havana now, it has been that comfortable for them. Two minutes of stoppage time in Manaus.

  15. Postpublished at 21:43 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

    Brad Friedel
Tottenham and former USA goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live

"The Ecuador manager will know the score in the Switzerland game. But he will probably wait until half time before considering changes. They have to do something because this French team have such good technique and are applying so much pressure."

  16. Postpublished at 21:43 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Ecuador midfielder Christian NoboaImage source, AFP

Ecuador midfielder Cristhian Noboa has been in the wars - as blood streams from his head following an earlier aerial clash. And that is a not-so-seamless link into an Ecuadorian chance. Noboa has nothing to do with the attack, however, as a leaping Enner Valencia forces Hugo Lloris in a smart save with his legs at his near post.

Miracle Roch:, external Pogba has been trying so hard to do a "Pirlo" in this match.

    Former England defender Phil Neville
    MOTD analyst

"I saw a lot of Paul Pogba in the youth teams at Manchester United. He is one of the complete young midfielders in the world. He is gathering experience all the time at Juventus. One thing he does do is work hard at his game and he does want to be the best midfielder in the world."

And that is perfectly illustrated by France creating their best moment of the match. Paul Pogba keeps his eyes fixed on the ball, tenses his neck muscles and plants his streaky-blond mohican haircut on the ball. It flies towards the Ecuador top corner, but the hand of Alexander Dominguez is there to palm clear.

  20. Postpublished at 21:38 British Summer Time 25 June 2014

Back in Rio it is all very quiet in the usual-carnival-like Maracana. Ecuador need a miracle as they search for the win that they surely need to keep them in the World Cup. But at the moment it is all about stemming the tide at the other end...
