Since 1966, Switzerland had never scored more than one goal in the first half of a World Cup game.
And that means Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who is retiring after the World Cup, looks well on course to extend his 31-year managerial career for another 90 minutes at the very least.
Steve Claridge
BBC Radio 5 live
"Shaqiri composed himself, didn't rush his finish. It was a bit like his first goal. The front two have been very, very good for Switzerland."
If there's one man you don't give time and space to it is the Alpine Messi. Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, who has been virtually anonymous in the previous two games, shows his quality to drill Switzerland into a 2-0 lead. It was a swift break from the Swiss, started by Gokhan Inler's long pass to Josip Drmic down the left and he picked out the run of Shaqiri.

David Ornstein
BBC Sport at the Maracana
"With the pattern of play firmly established from the opening minute - France in total control - it doesn't look like this is going to be one of the World Cup's most evenly contested encounters.
"But that has done little to dampen a fantastic atmosphere inside the Maracana, where the two sets of fans are seemingly taking it in turns to belt out their favourite tunes. That said, it took just nine minutes for them to start a Mexican Wave and that must be a tournament record."

"Switzerland are doing their bit and that's all they can do. They look the better team and at this stage the score is a fair indication of what we're seeing."
We've just passed the quarter mark in both games, and Xherdan Shaqiri's opener for Switzerland is putting them into the last 16.
The Swiss almost receive another boost as France threaten the Ecuador goal. Keeper Alexander Dominguez goes wafting at Bacary Sagna's swinging cross from the right, but is lucky to see the ball skim Karim Benzema's shaved bonce.
Brad Friedel
Tottenham and former USA goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live
"This French team looks so big, powerful and strong from up here compared to Ecuador's players. It's definitely one of their main attributes. They have come here to play and they've made another confident start."
Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Kilbane

"Switzerland are sitting very deep now and trying to do a containing job on Ecuador. It is a dangerous game though."

Half chances at both ends as the game threatens to open up - just like the Manaus pitch.
First, Swiss goalscorer Xherdan Shaqiri eyes up another long-range effort, but sends it wide, before Brayan Beckeles swivels and shanks one wide.
And Enner Valencia almost gets an instant sniff of the goal. France carelessly lose possession as Valencia looks to pounce, but his pass for Jefferson Montero is too hard and keeper Hugo Lloris comes out to gather.
Phew - panic over. Enner Valencia trots back to the pitch to lead Ecuador's line after that injury scare. Amazing what a good wet of the magic sponge can do.
Another pained expression on the furrowed brow of Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda. Star man Enner Valencia goes down in a heap...
Thwack! France midfielder Moussa Sissoko gets his head over the ball and swivels beautifully to cleanly connect with a vicious volley that flashes towards goal. Textbook technique. But it is easy for Ecuador stopper Alexander Dominguez to save.
Little response from Honduras either - they look blunter than a well-used kitchen knife up front. Remember, Carlo Costly's strike against Ecuador last week is the only goal that Honduras have scored in their 569 minutes of World Cup action.

"If the game carries on like this Jefferson Montero and Antonio Valencia are going to get frustrated very quickly. They're being forced to defend and that's not their game. Ecuador have got to pose some threat."

No sparkling response from Ecuador to that Swiss goal yet. France are enjoying much of the early possession, with Antoine Griezmann shooting low and wide from distance.
