Mitch H Mansfield:, external Thomas Muller's unique characteristics and skill set make him my favourite player in world football.

B19 UMR:, external Would love to see Algeria cause an upset against the Germans. Judging by what we've seen so far at this World Cup anything is possible.

German football journalist Raphael Honigstein: "Germany came here with the very clear aim of winning the World Cup. The German FA and the German public might be prepared to give them a pass if they lose to Brazil in a semi-final, or Argentina, but anything less and there will be serious questions.

"This is a side that is expected to win things. Maybe not a World Cup in Brazil but losing to Algeria in the last 16? I don't think Joachim Low would survive that."

That German team, boasting seven Bayern Munich men, looks very strong indeed. But Algeria will be up for this, they showed in the group that they can score goals, albeit against weaker opposition.

An early one for the Desert Foxes and we may be in for a cracker. The last-16 matchups have all come to life late on so far - can this one be a wire-to-wire thriller?

John: Justice would be served if Algeria beat Germany this evening. 32 years late but it would be sweet. And then they would play France! What a World Cup for Algeria if they beat France as well and settle another old score!

"Germany have got such a strong squad, they can bring people on to change the direction of a game.

"Algeria have done fantastically well to get this far - you saw that in their celebrations when they got the draw they needed with Russia to progress to the knockout stage for the first time.

"I cannot see them beating Germany but they will have a go and they will try to play as well - credit to them that they did not kick their way out of their group or park the bus."

    Lawro's prediction: 2-0

German football journalist Raphael Honigstein: "A lot of the negative stereotypes about the German national team started because of 1982. The arrogance they showed, the complete disregard to the public, and the complete lack of contrition from the players after the game really did not help matters. The Spanish newspaper Marca famously ran the match report in their crime section.

"The Germany teams of Jurgen Klinsmann and Joachim Low were the first to really escape that shadow.

"Low has said 1982 was a long time ago, that it was nothing to do with us. I think there are only two players in the squad who were alive, just, in Miroslav Klose and Roman Weidenfeller. But Low's frustration also stems from the fact that this is a very different Germany team.

"The bigger problem for him is instilling that fear that Algeria could harm them. You can see from the changes he has made this is a match he is taking very seriously. This Germany team doesn't go into games with a sense of entitlement anymore."

Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic seems like quite an angry man in the build up to tonight's game.

As well as raging over the 'Disgrace of Gijon', he also got heated in Sunday's news conference and refused to divulge which of his Muslim players are observing Ramadan, the 30-day dawn-to-dusk fast which began on Sunday.

"This is a private matter and when you ask this you lack respect and ethics," said the Bosnian.

"The players will do as they wish and I would like to stop this controversy."

So what's at stake tonight? Only a coveted place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

And the winners of tonight's showdown in Porto Alegre know the identity of their next opponents - France.

Les Bleus scored twice in the final 11 minutes through Paul Pogba and Joseph Yobo's own goal to edge past last-16 opponents Nigeria.

"Germany captain Philipp Lahm described the north Africans as "unpleasant to play against" and a side who "prefer to play a foul than to lose the ball".

"Asked how great the pressure is on his team to win this tournament, Lahm added: "Germany is a three-time World Cup winner and there aren't that many teams that have won so many titles. I think we have great potential - whether this is enough for this tournament, we will see."

"There will also be the risk of a few showers, with a moderate westerly wind and temperatures of around 15C."

Will we see a World Cup record this evening? Germany striker Miroslav Klose is level on 15 World Cup goals with Brazilian legend Ronaldo and may fancy a late dash at the Algeria defence to go onto 16.

Unfortunately for record-breaking lovers out there, he only seems to get about 20 minutes tops from the bench these days...

So a big night for German full-back Shkodran Mustafi, who starts at right-back. He wasn't even in the squad until Dortmund winger Marco Reus hurt his ankle in a pre-tournament friendly.

The 22-year-old joined Everton when he was 17 and made his debut replacing the living legend that is Tony Hibbert in a Europa League game.

He wisely clocked on that life on Merseyside wouldn't get any better, and left to join Sampdoria in 2012 on a free transfer.

"It's a wet, cold and windy afternoon in the southern city of Porto Alegre, but with plenty of noisy Algerians in town and a substantial Germany community based here for many years, it's likely to be a red hot atmosphere inside Estadio Beira-Rio come kick-off.

"Fortunately, the renovation of this eye-catching venue for the World Cup included the construction of a hulking roof to protect spectators from the elements - it will certainly come in handy today."
