Algeria have not been out of their half since the start of extra time but now they win a corner. Can a set-piece ignite the tie?

It so nearly does! Penalty box pinball, the ball falls at the feet of Mehdi Mostefa, but he lashes it wide from 12 yards.

    What a chance!

Germany playing some lovely stuff now, Mesut Ozil suddenly has all the time and space in the world to play and he finds Thomas Muller for a curler which drifts just beyond the far post.

    Disappointed Algeria bench

Edward Herbert:, external Genuinely gutted that Germany just scored! Algeria have played their hearts out but this was always going to happen.

Allan McDevitt:, external Thought it looked lucky in real time but that's a pretty classy finish.

Mesut Ozil you're in! Absolutely clean through, but his touch lets him down and Rafik Halliche is able to clean it out with a great tackle.

There could be more goals in this.

There are some very tired legs in the Algeria side now as Thomas Muller finds space - his speciality - but sees a low shot blocked.

"Is it genius? I think it is from Andre Schurrle. He knows what he has to do and that is brilliant skill. Thomas Muller made it. That is what he does if he is not scoring himself.

"Relief as much as joy for Germany. It won't make the Algerians change their approach too much. They have attacked for most of the game anyway and they will have to continue that way."

"Tired minds, tired legs from Algeria. It has been coming from Germany. They should have done it in 90 minutes, but now they have done it in the first two minutes of extra-time. Have Algeria got the energy to come back? I just don't see it."

That could be a knockout blow. Can Algeria recover from this? They've been in onslaught mode for a good half hour and now they need to respond. A real tough ask from here.

    Oh Mandi!

Algeria full-back Aissa Mandi gives it away out wide, Thomas Muller gets past the defender and squares to the near post where German sub Andre Schurrle turns it in with a backheel of disputed intention...

Did he mean it? I'm not sure. Does it matter? No.

This is good news for France, of course, who play the winners in Rio on Friday. Miroslav Klose is finally being readied to come on for Germany.

Dale Harris:, external Surely Algeria have to press for a winner in extra time. They would be mad to hold out for penalties against the Germans.

Rastamadeus FC:, external Mesut Ozil really needs to be dragged off. He's offering less than nothing. The game has an 119th-minute Miroslav Klose winner written all over it.

Martin Brown:, external Whatever happens, Rais Mbolhi the Algeria goalkeeper is man of the match.

The Algerians are all back up on their feet now as coach Vahid Halilhodzic delivers a passionate speech, all 23 members of the squad are hand-in-hand. Stirring stuff.

BBC Sport's David Ornstein at Estadio Beira-Rio

"Huge cheers from the Algeria supporters and neutrals as we head to extra time. Less so the Germany fans and members of the media who had flights home booked for tonight."

    Former England winger Chris Waddle

"Well done Algeria. They really hung in there in the last 15 minutes, but Germany should have won the game. Algeria had the better of the first half, but Germany moved the ball a lot sharper in the second half and should have put the game to bed.

"We've seen this with Algeria in this World Cup, they play well for an hour then seem to come off the pace. The other team get a lot of ball and get a result. You can see that happening here. Have Algeria got another half-hour in the tank? I don't think so. Germany to win it in extra-time."

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"It would be wrong to say Algeria have held on and kept Germany out. They have more played their part in a game of 'you attack, we attack'.

"Who wins now? Or do we go to penalties? We know how Germany like those."
