Temperatures rise on the pitch as the red mist - and a whole lot of frustration - descends.

Messi challenges Valon Behrami and the Swiss midfielder goes down in a theatrical manner after the slightest of shoves.

Yousuf Ali:, external Argentina struggled against every team in the group stages; Messi was their saving grace so I'm not surprised.

Thompson Beeby:, external The passing and crossing is truly awful from both sides.

A scrappy match gets even scrappier.

Messi is dragged down just outside the Swiss area but the referee is not interested.

Switzerland then break but Josip Drmic is fouled by Ezequiel Garay.

It's fair to say this has not been a classic.

"Finally that bit of magic from Lionel Messi. When it came to him on the edge of the box, he passed one, passed two, such balance - we've heard people say just show him on his right, but you cannot do that, he is too good. Messi drove the shot in, Diego Benaglio spilled it the first time, but he saw it late, and makes an excellent second save."

"The cross was just behind Rodrigo Palacio, it was not an easy chance and it might have been a better one for the player behind him - Gonzalo Higuain. Palacio was just a little bit too eager."

"The goalkeeper does well. The shot goes through legs and he only sees it late. Good save."

It comes moments after substitute Rodrigo Palacio goes close to putting Argentina ahead.

    Switzerland are on the back-foot.

"In the first 70 minutes, Angel Di Maria has lost possession 28 times. That has to be some sort of record."

Phoenixville:, external The Swiss plan is simple. Hold on for 90 minutes and beyond and go for the shoot-out. We all know the outcome then.

Naz:, external Not sure why Argentina are deploying their attacks down the left. It's coming to nothing. Need to drive through the centre.

Alexander:, external If Angel di Maria was a delivery service, nothing would get delivered. Terrible today. Great ability but where is the final ball?

"The only way I can see Argentina scoring is through a lapse of concentration from the Switzerland defence, which has not happened so far, or through a moment of sheer magic from Lionel Messi. Argentina have been very ineffective."

It is only two weeks since Switzerland were taken apart by France but they are holding out well in Sao Paulo.

A crunching challenge by substitute Gelson Fernandes results in a rise in the noise levels - and a booking for the Swiss sub.

Argentina finally make a change, Lavezzi makes way for Rodrigo Palacio.

Mo, Manchester: How on earth can people criticise Messi? He's been clinical in every game even though every team has a tactic to crowd him out. And he's not exactly got the best in-form attacking players with him. Higuain's been poor.

Luke, Herts: Ricardo Rodriguez looks like a quality left-back. A good fit for Man Utd?

Angel Di Maria's showboating attempt to cross the ball, which then went straight out of play, has not gone down well on Twitter.

Mike White:, external Pathetic attempt at showboating from the Argentina player on that 'cross'....both the intention and execution.

Mahbub Albahry:, external Di Maria and his crosses have not impressed me at all. All seems to be dull.

John Dunthorne:, external Showboating in a World Cup tie that you need to win, they should send Di Maria home.

First change of the match as Switzerland's Granit Xhaka makes way for Gelson Fernandes.

It comes as Argentina enjoy their best spell. Higuain goes close before Messi volleys narrowly over from distance.

David: Argentina looking less and less likely to be serious contenders for this World Cup as the tournament goes on. Who knows, a bit of Messi magic may again carry them through this game. But world champions need more than that.
