"There is what we could call a lack of ambition from Argentina, they are keeping the ball but are not playing with a high tempo. They are waiting for Angel di Maria, Lionel Messi or Gonzalo Higuain to come up with something special around the penalty box, rather than creating chances through a real team method."

At least Argentina have not conceded.

All three of their wins at this tournament have been by a single goal margin.

And there was little evidence in the first 45 minutes to suggest that they will clock up a handsome win against the Swiss.

Lionel Messi had plenty of touches in that first half but he hasn't been able to cause any real damage to the Switzerland defence. Yet.

"When Messi gets the ball, they crowd him out and Switzerland have got their tactics spot on."

"Argentina are like Donald Trump's hair... flash up front, plenty going on in the middle but rather ropey at the back.

"Shambolic finish from Drmic. What a chance. Argentina very average so far."

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Half-time approaching. Corner for Switzerland. Jeers all around the ground.

    It comes to nothing.

There's no stoppage time. The referee has had enough. I don't blame him.

For the fourth successive game at this tournament, Argentina's defence looks suspect.

A Neymar, a Muller or a Rodriguez would surely have made them pay. Drmic will be haunted by that miss.

"The second great opportunity for Switzerland. It was like Geoff Hurst running through at Wembley. Josip Drmic tried to the chip the goalkeeper but in the end he just dinks it in at chest height, he got nowhere near enough on it."

"Is this Di Maria the same one as the fella at Real Madrid? He's been hopeless at this World Cup."

Steven McNamara:, external Can't believe Carlos Tevez was left out of the Argentina squad. Far better than Higuain for me.

Nicholas Jones:, external The Swiss are going to start losing men if they don't stop cutting down the Argentine players.

"Goalkeeper Sergio Romero is very, very fortunate. In the end it is such a poor finish. It should be 1-0 to Switzerland."

Will Switzerland get a better chance than that?

Josip Drmic is sent clean through by a defence-splitting pass by Xherdan Shaqiri but he makes a complete hash of his attempted chip over the advancing keeper Sergio Romero, who is slow off his line.

    How costly will that prove?

"Switzerland are now growing a little bit more in confidence, their defensive midfield players are getting a little bit of space to work with. Yes, Argentina are great going forward but they don't work particularly hard defensively at times."

  14. YELLOW CARDpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    The referee's patience finally snaps.

First booking in what is a niggly affair goes to Switzerland's Granit Xhaka for a clumsy challenge on Lavezzi.

A huge roar goes up from Argentina's fans.

Andy: The best news I've heard all day is that current Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is stepping down after this World Cup campaign. That's great news for England ahead of their European Championship qualifying campaign. Great coach and tactician.

England are in the same Euro 2016 qualifying group as Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino. If Switzerland lose today, their next competitive match will be at home against England on 8 September in their first Euro 2016 qualifying game.

Switzerland's defenders had little to do in the opening exchanges but they're working flat out now as Argentina attempt to exert more pressure.

Ezequiel Garay narrowly fails to connect with a corner by Angel Di Maria. Any sort of touch and that was 1-0.

The yellow-shirted neutrals are willing Switzerland forward.

"What a fantastic opportunity. I don't think Granit Xhaka hit that with a great deal of conviction, he should have put his foot through it. That could easily have been Switzerland 1-0 up. A bright short corner, but the finish has got to have more power."
