"How many times has Tim Howard saved with his legs? What an evening he has had. That substitution for Belgium should not be Eden Hazard going off. The two men playing behind him look dead on their feet."

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 23:22 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Belgium are in again on the break! Romelu Lukaku wrestles his defender to the ground and his low shot is saved again by Tim Howard. Incredible display from the Everton keeper.

"After Julian Green scored Jurgen Klinsmann ran onto the pitch to kick the ball back because Belgium were trying to waste time. Just moments ago they had already won it. Surely not?

"Then a brilliant chance for Jermaine Jones and now USA have got massive danger down both wings. All game DeAndre Yedlin has been brilliant on the right but I want to see more of Green on the left. Get the ball out there!"

"USA! USA! USA!" is the chant in Salvador. Lyrical genius that one, but where are they getting this energy from? Belgium thought they were through but they are the ones hanging on now...

"Game over? Why did I just say that? Green takes his goal so well, Toby Alderweireld let him go and it just came off the edge of his toe. I can't believe what I'm watching."

  6. CLOSE!published at 23:19 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

In the history of unlikely comebacks, this would be up there with Noel Edmonds or Blankety Blank. But they go so close to an equaliser, as Jermaine Jones toe-pokes a cross a yard wide. It went past the post in slow motion...

"Anyone who can beat Tim Howard tonight really deserves applause because he has been magnificent.

"When Romelu Lukaku works he can be one of the best centre-forwards around, but he doesn't always put it in. Being dropped to the substitutes' bench must have woken him up because he has come on and bullied USA. If he carries on like this then Belgium can go as far as you like at this World Cup."

"That's the game. It was a good break away, Kevin De Bruyne took his time, played a perfectly-weighted pass and that's the finish we have seen so many times from Romelu Lukaku.

"He has done more in the first 15 minutes of extra-time here than he had done in the rest of the World Cup and you can see the smile on his face."

Game, set, and the match, Belgium.

It's a substitute again as Belgium catch America dead on their feet, Kevin De Bruyne gets an assist to go with his opening goal as he plays in Romelu Lukaku, and he leathers the ball home at the near post.

"Psychologically, losing a goal so early in extra-time is huge, and to concede another goal would be the end of the road for USA. But they are still in this. They can make a chance, they only need one."

    Former England international Danny Murphy

"The game has opened up and that has helped Romelu Lukaku, but he is playing with a point to prove and sometimes players need that and come out fighting.

"Their substitutions have been really good and have made a huge impression. But, if Belgium get through, I would be worried for them when they play better opposition as there is a lack of tenacity in the middle of the park."
