"The media sweep is an absolutely integral part of any pre-match build-up.

"The predictions of my colleagues are strictly their business but happy to put mine out there.

"England to win 2-1 with a tie-breaker of Steven Gerrard for the first goal. If more is needed to decide I've gone for England's captain to score in the 18th minute.

    "What could possibly go wrong?"

Japan v GreeceImage source, Getty Images

In tonight's late match Japan and Greece, who both lost their Group C openers, meet.

They have met just once before, which was at the 2005 Confederations Cup. Japan won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal by Masashi Oguro. Yasuhito Endo is the only current member of the Japan squad to have taken part in that game.

Greece's only previous World Cup fixture against an Asian side was in 2010 when they lost 2-0 against South Korea in their opening game of the tournament.

Uruguay present one of the "hardest matches in the country's history" and are historically "as tough as hell", says 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.

"I think we've got a good set of players this year," he tells Channel 4 Racing. "Probably the best we've had of the last decade. They've got an unbelievable history to live up to which is hard.

"You have to have the fearless type of players at international level who can go that little bit further than you've ever been before.

"We have some of those younger players and I think they'll be ok tonight. We have to be in there, it's unthinkable to think we cannot go forward. It's the type of thing you live and die for and I really hope we do the best we can."

    Alvaro GonzalezImage source, Reuters

If coach Oscar Tabarez was worried about squad harmony out in Brazil then the selection of Lazio's Alvaro Gonzalez was perhaps not the wisest choice.

The right-sided midfielder was criticised by the mellow Diego Forlan for providing poor service and also was a bit-part player in a scandal in Italy.

It was alleged that he was involved with 22-year-old Stefania Fummo around the same time that the married Edinson Cavani was romantically linked to the student.

"An awful lot of newspapers and TV stations here in Brazil are calling the England v Uruguay game - 'jogo de Vida ou morte' - the game of life or death. It is big news. But there is a better story here in Brazil today.

"Under the headline 'Erramos: felipao nao falou com colunista da folha' (Mistake: Felipao did not give us an interview) the newspaper Folha São Paulo has been forced to say sorry for publishing an interview with Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari that did actually not happen., external It turns out the paper interviewed a look-a-like without realising. Clearly a good one!"

Valderrama played more than 100 times for Colombia between 1985 and 1998.

What do you make of it so far? My World Cup-o-meter is up around eight out of ten so far after a first week that has featured hatfuls of goals, a fair slice of shocks and absolutely no vuvuzelas.

The BBC's esteemed pundits seem to agree as well.

"There is no sign of a defensive outlook, and no sign of a particularly good defence either." says Mark Lawrenson.

Alan Hansen's opinion not included. After some of the defending, he is probably too shocked and angry to use words, only growls.

"Brazilian TV has been featuring England heavily this morning. Two of the networks have actually sent correspondents to the UK and having featured the unique attraction of the full English breakfast before the Italy match, they have resorted to gauging the mood on the streets today.

"One England fan was interviewed outside a pub in the West End of London and said he felt England could still win the World Cup and that he wished he was in Brazil. Another said that it was time to drop Wayne Rooney, and that he wished he was in Brazil.

"Interestingly, the Brazilian TV stations have also been discussing how attitudes towards Brazil have changed since the tournament began. From all the talk being about the potential protests, they are delighted that the rest of the world now considers this to be the best World Cup in recent times."

  18. Uruguay without captain Luganopublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Football tactics expert Jonathan Wilson has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 live about Uruguay's missing injured captain Diego Lugano.

Wilson says: "Lugano mystifies me because whenever I've seen him play for Uruguay, he is superb.

"Then you see him in club football and he is absolutely awful. Some of that may be that Uruguay like to play a deep line defensively and he doesn't get exposed. Nevertheless, he is a leader and he will be a miss."

You can hear more from Jonathan, Neil Lennon and Dan Walker on BBC Radio 5 live's Rio Report now.

  19. Get Involvedpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Hewy, Carlislie via text: England should play a diamond midfield with 2 up front, similar as Liverpool did at the end of the season. 4-1-2-1-2; Hart - Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines - Gerrard - Henderson, Wilshire - Sterling - Sturridge, Rooney. Surely that will get the best out of everyone and all in natural positions?

Uruguay's weakness is in the middle of the park and at centre-half, this team would exploit that.

  20. England's World Cup performances - 2006published at 14:42 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England finished top of their group after 1-0 and 2-0 wins over Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago respectively before drawing 2-2 against Sweden.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side then beat Ecuador 1-0 thanks to David Beckham's goal before meeting Portugal in the quarter-finals.

The match went to penalties after it had finished goalless, despite England playing for almost an hour with 10 men after Wayne Rooney was sent off. Owen Hargreaves scored his spot-kick, but Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all missed as Portugal won 3-1 on penalties.
