  1. What about the draw?published at 14:39 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    John Motson
BBC Match of the Day commentator

"We haven't discussed the possibility of a draw tonight. It would leave things open but only just perhaps. I think nerves will play a part in this game because both teams know that a defeat would see them take the path Spain did.

"Going forward, if England win, I think Costa Rica will be a different challenge but I think England will progress. Should we go through it could be the winners of Colombia and Ivory Coast with Brazil in the quarter-final where I think it would end."

  2. Team newspublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Colombia could name the same starting line-up which defeated Greece 3-0 in their opening game. Midfielder Fredy Guarin is available after a ban but forward Carlos Bacca is missing because of a muscle problem.

Ivory Coast coach Sabri Lamouchi must decide whether to recall captain and record scorer Didier Drogba. If he does, Lamouchi will either have to change system or drop striker Wilfried Bony, who scored in their 2-1 victory against Japan.

England v Uruguay is not the only match being played in the World Cup tonight as Colombia take on Ivory Coast in the first match.

Ivory Coast's recent record against South American opposition is not particularly great, with their last two games against such opposition ending in defeat. In 2010 in South Africa, they were beaten 3-1 by Brazil (pictured), while they lost 2-1 to Argentina at Germany 2006.

That will be of good news for Colombia, whose record against African sides is mixed. They lost to Cameroon in 1990 but beat Tunisia eight years later.

The match is live on BBC One with live commentary on BBC Radio 5 live.

  4. Angry Finkepublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Cameroon coach Volker Finke calls his team's performance at the World Cup "disgraceful" following their 4-0 defeat to Croatia.

Barcelona midfielder Alex Song was sent off for an elbow on Mario Mandzukic with his team trailing 1-0 and Croatia punished Cameroon with three goals after the interval.

To make matters worse, late in the game, a fight broke out between Cameroon team-mates Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Benjamin Moukandjo.

"Some players behaved very badly, and that's why we have conceded four goals," Finke says. "After such a result, we have to admit that it is a disgrace."

  5. England's World Cup performances - 2002published at 14:25 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England drew their first game, 1-1 against Sweden, before David Beckham's penalty gave them a 1-0 win against Argentina. A goalless draw with Nigeria ensured England finished second, but they then beat Denmark 3-0 in the last 16.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's team faced Brazil in the quarter-finals. Michael Owen put the Three Lions ahead, before Rivaldo equalised and a 40-yard free kick from Ronaldinho took Brazil 2-1 ahead. The Brazilian striker was then sent off but England could not score again and were out.

  6. Key battlespublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Glen Johnson v Cristian Rodriguez

The likes of Edinson Cavani, Diego Forlan and Abel Hernandez all have the ability to hurt England, but Cristian Rodriguez is also a threat.

The stocky winger is dangerous in possession and able to open up sides. Restricted to a back-up role at Atletico Madrid last season, this is Rodriguez's chance to impress against Glen Johnson.

The Liverpool right-back will need an impressive performance if he is to shackle the winger, who likes to shoot from distance.

"Roy Hodgson has got the Brazilian media baffled. In this morning's Journo do Commercio newspaper, the headline reads 'Technico ingles faz misterio' - 'English coach stays mysterious'.

"The story says English manager Roy Hodgson refused to give anything away before the match against Uruguay. Hodgson's power to confuse has not stopped there, however.

    Diaro de Pernambuco

"In the Diaro de Pernambuco, the regional newspaper here in Recife, England's XI includes Leighton Baines at right back, Phil Jagielka on the left and Glen Johnson at centre back."

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter in Sao Paulo

"If England were not to emerge from this first group stage it would be the first time they failed to do so in a three-game group since 1954. However, they are upbeat and optimistic and they know they have to defend better.

"An unchanged side is expected to be named with maybe just Raheem Sterling moving to the flank and Wayne Rooney used behind the strikers."

  10. England's World Cup performances - 1998published at 14:01 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England failed to qualify for USA 1994 but took their place in the tournament in France four years later.

Glenn Hoddle's side beat Tunisia, lost to Romania and beat Colombia to set up a match with Argentina in the last 16.

Michael Owen, 18, scored a wonderful individual goal to put England 2-1 ahead, but Argentina equalised before David Beckham was sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone. The match went to penalties with Argentina winning 4-3.

Today's #QSTeaser from @QuestionofSport: Which three players whose surnames begin with a vowel have scored for England at the World Cup?

The answers will be revealed later today.

  14. Key battlespublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Daniel Sturridge v Diego Godin

With a knee injury ruling out captain Diego Lugano on the eve of the game, even more pressure has fallen on the shoulders of Godin.

    Daniel SturridgeImage source, Getty Images

The centre-half played a key role in Atletico Madrid's remarkable season and will need to be at his best to shackle in-form Sturridge.

Godin is combative, good in the air and excellent positionally, but the Liverpool striker will certainly prove a handful for the 28-year-old.

  15. The scenariopublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

Even if England lose tonight, they will not be definitely out of the World Cup.

It's possible for them to be beaten, but still go through, as long as Italy beat Costa Rica on Friday. England would have to beat Costa Rica on 24 June and hope Italy defeat Uruguay on the same day.

However, if England lose to Uruguay and the Italy v Costa Rica match tomorrow ends in a draw or a Costa Rica win, then Roy Hodgson's side would be eliminated.

  16. Postpublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Ben Smith
    BBC Sport in Recife

"England fans, it seems, get everywhere. A morning stroll along Boa Viagem beach in Recife this morning, three hours flight from where England are playing, brought me face to face with a man wearing a red England away shirt.

"'Optimistic?' I said. 'A draw wouldn't be the worst result', was his answer. English caution at its best. There is though plenty of interest in this game here in Recife, with Italy and Costa Rica training here ahead of their game tomorrow. More from both of those camps later in the day."

  17. England's World Cup performances - 1990published at 13:35 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

England's best performance since 1966 saw them finish fourth in Italia 90.

Managed again by Bobby Robson, England drew with Republic of Ireland and Netherlands before beating Egypt to move into the knockout phases. David Platt's last-minute extra-time winner saw off Belgium before England fought back from 2-1 down to beat Cameroon 3-2.

    Paul GascoigneImage source, Empics

England's star player, Paul Gascoigne, cried after being booked in the semi-final, which would have kept him out of the final. But England did not make it that far as they lost 4-3 on penalties to West Germany.

Everton and England's Ross Barkley, who made his World Cup debut as a substitute in the defeat against Italy, says that the Three Lions are ready to bounce back now they are out of the tropical temperature of Manaus.

"The weather is not like it was in Manaus," said Barkley. , external

"It shouldn't be difficult for us to play our game, we don't have to worry about the weather. We didn't get rattled by the Italy result because we played some good football and all the players are confident going into the Uruguay game."

  20. Key battlespublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 19 June 2014

    Gary Cahill v Luis Suarez

This match could be a tale of Liverpool's two strikers - Daniel Sturridge and Suarez, if the latter is able to overcome the knee injury that prevented him from featuring in the embarrassing 3-1 defeat by Costa Rica.

England's defence will need no introduction to Uruguay's all-time top scorer thanks to his Premier League exploits, with Chelsea centre-half Cahill likely to be charged with keeping him at bay. Quick, unpredictable and skilful, Suarez will be key to Oscar Tabarez's side.
