Wednesday's first match proved to be a cracker as Netherlands fought back from 2-1 down to beat Australia 3-2.

The Dutch, who thrashed Spain 5-1 on Friday, went ahead through Arjen Robben's goal before a spectacular volley from ex-Everton man Tim Cahill made it 1-1 a minute later.

Crystal Palace's Mile Jedinak converted a penalty to put Australia in front but Netherlands won it with further goals from Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay.

Netherlands have lost in the final on three occasions, including four years ago, and they are already in the last 16 in Brazil. Match highlights.

So our first question of the day is whether it is the end of an era for the Spain team? With so many great players and so much strength in and out of their squad, can they recover and do well at the next European Championship?

Or has their patient, passing game been found out? Is their style too easy to defend against and open to quick counter-attacking? Where did it all go wrong for Spain?

The pair began arguing in their own area in stoppage time before the QPR player thrust his head at the forward.

"It's unimaginable. I saw this happen and I need to find out exactly what happened, why exactly these two players exploded," said Cameroon coach Volker Finke.

The incident almost continued in the tunnel, but injured striker Samuel Eto'o, who watched the match from the sidelines, stepped in to separate the pair.

In last night's late game, Cameroon were knocked out of the competition as they were beaten 4-0 by Croatia.

The African side fell behind in the 11th minute as Ivica Olic fired home, and were reduced to 10 men after Alex Song lashed out at Mario Mandzukic.

The Spanish had lost their opening match 5-1 to Netherlands and they fell behind at the Maracana to Eduardo Vargas's 19th-minute goal, before Charles Aranguiz added a second after the break.

Spain have been top of the world rankings for 65 out of the last 72 months, but, on a day when king Juan Carlos abdicated the throne, the Spanish side's reign as football's superpower has also come to an end. Match highlights

For the last six years Spain have been sensational. They have won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012 playing a passing, possession style of football which will be struggled to be repeated.

But now the party in Brazil is over. After only two games they are out.
