    After ending a spell of 15 matches without an international goal in October 2013, France striker Karim Benzema has arrived at the World Cup in good form and scored two in his team's opening win over Honduras.

    He has spoken to the New York Times , externalabout how he grew up idolising the Brazilian team of 1998 that were beaten by France in that year's World Cup final and the close relationship he now has with Zindine Zidane, the scorer of two goals in that game and assistant manager at their club Real Madrid.

    Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes says that England's defeat to Uruguay shows that Roy Hodgson's first-choice defenders are not good enough.

    I'm not sure how much consolation it will be for England's players but Sepp Blatter has sympathy for them after their defeat by Uruguay.

    "I think England were unlucky. England looked like a good team," the Fifa president said.

    Actor and musician Riz Ahmed has accused a fellow England fan of racially abusing him while he watched England's defeat to Uruguay in Sao Paulo last night.

    Portugal team-mate Miguel Veloso says that he has seen nothing in training to substantiate internet rumours that Cristiano Ronaldo is risking his career with his determination to continue at the World Cup.

    "I'm not a doctor but from what I see, Ronaldo is fine," Veloso said.

    "He is training, he is jumping and he is shooting. There is not much else to say."

    Portugal, who lost their opening match against Germany 4-0, face the United States in their second encounter in the tournament on Sunday.
