Former England manager Graham Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live

"I think defensively we need to look at one or two things. At that level you need to watch players like Luis Suarez and we didn't do that. You could say the defending was naive.

"It's a process of building and it takes time. Roy Hodgson has only been in the job for two years and it takes longer than that to put a team together in international football.

"I do hope that the FA stick with him; I wouldn't want them to act like a Premier League club. I think they will stick with him."

Former England winger Chris Waddle on BBC Radio 5 live

"I'm just fed up of talking about the same old problems. The biggest problem is the Premier League. They have a product which they sell around the world which is entertaining but it's doing our players no good whatsoever.

"This is a Premier league side which played in what is supposed to be the best league in the world. You're not telling me that all of those Uruguayan players will get in many teams in the world apart from Suarez.

"We go on banging a drum about we've got this and we've got that. Do you know what makes the Premier League exciting? It's players like Luis Suarez, the foreign players. We hype all our players massively, as we always do."

George via text: Let's not forget where we were four years ago. England 0-0 Algeria probably the worst and most uninspiring game of professional football ever played. We might be practically out for 2014 but what an improvement!

Pete via text: How can we expect a team to go out and perform when they don't play regularly together? All the top teams play their best players and the same formation whether it be friendlies or competitive games. England are obsessed with experimenting when they should be looking to settle the side and formation.

Dave, Lincoln, via text: Johnson, Jagielka, Baines don't look confident, Henderson adds nothing and Gerrard doesn't seem to know what his role is, all down to Hodgson I'm afraid.

"We played pretty well but not good enough," he said

"We are very disappointed as defenders, that is the last thing you want to see from a punt down the field. Everyone is absolutely devastated."

Huw Evans:, external I honestly think that despite losing; England are starting to play the right style of football, there are plenty of positives.

Steve:, external At least we can relax and enjoy the show now without nursing a forlorn hope that we would make an impact on the competition.

"But the big concern was defensively, we looked weak at times and it proved the case in both matches against Italy and Uruguay. What was really exasperating in the Uruguay game was we got ourselves back in the game after going behind.

"Everything seemed to be going great then to make a schoolboy error like that for Suarez's winner beggars belief. It was just a lack of concentration. How can you do that when you know a draw could make such a difference?"

"I don't have any intention to resign," says Hodgson. "I've been really happy with the way the players have responded to the work we've tried to do.

"I'm bitterly disappointed, of course, but I don't feel I need to resign, no. On the other hand, if the FA think I'm not the right man to do the job, that will be their decision not mine."

  20. Let's all cheer on Italypublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 20 June 2014

England's hopes of staying in the World Cup are heavily reliant on Italy. Cesare Prandelli's side need to beat Costa Rica in this evening's first match (17:00 BST), with any other result sending Roy Hodgson's team out.

But even then, more luck will still be needed. Italy need to then defeat Uruguay and England must triumph against Costa Rica on Tuesday.
