Scillaci, Derby on text: "Good performances", "could possibly still qualify" are the kind of comments that ensure we will never come out of the malaise we've been in for almost half a century. The reality is the performances in Brazil have been woeful.

"All other nations have one outfield player with the ball and all other nine moving to make options whereas our other nine are forever stationary.

"The same problem gets worse when we are not in possession. We are still of the childish belief that football is played with the ball when the rest of the world understood long ago that it is played more without the ball than with it."

    Danny Mills
    BBC Radio 5 live

"Sadly, it's not been good enough. It's the same old things we have talked about. It's a lack of composure under pressure and an inability to keep the ball.

"Defensively, we have not been good enough. Against Italy, we were caught out by a short corner for the first goal. For the second goal, Baines dived in and Balotelli moved off Cahill.

"Against Uruguay, it was almost the same. Johnson doesn't get tight enough to the cross and Suarez moves off Jagielka. The second goal was shocking, it was a flick-on from Gerrard, there was nothing he could do, but Baines, Jagielka and Cahill were all over the shop. There was no defensive shape or organisation at all."
