    So which World Cup had the most worthy contenders for the title?

    Was it 2014? Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Belgium all looked like dark horses for the title.

    What about South Africa 2010, with Uruguay, Ghana and Paraguay surprising many by reaching the last eight. In fact, Uruguay reached the semis.

    Maybe it is 2002 Japan-South Korea - at that colourful tournament, Turkey and South Korea reached the last four.

    And in 1986, plucky England might have reached the semi-finals if it was not for that pesky Diego Maradona.

    The 30-year-old signed last summer on a 12-month contract and scored five league goals - featuring regularly under Tony Pulis.

    A still image fails to do justice to the ferocity with which Harald Schumacher's hip smashed into Frenchman Patrick Battiston at the 1982 World Cup.

    The Germany goalkeeper was not sent off and saved two penalties in the penalty shootout which followed to send his country into the final.

    Battiston was knocked out, lost teeth and ended up in hospital.

    Luis Suarez's appeal against his four-month ban from football for biting Italy's Giorgio Chiellini has been rejected by Fifa.

    The Liverpool striker - who is heavily linked with a move to Barcelona - can still take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

    Under the terms of the suspension, Suarez cannot train with his club and is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium.

    So, which World Cup had the most or most memorable controversies?

    The next vote is up. Surely the Diego Maradona Hand of God goal against England in 1986 is etched in your memories?

    What about Chile v Italy and the battle of Santiago in 1962 - two red cards and many, many fouls? And, of course, Luis Suarez and that bite at Brazil 2014.

    Tim Cahill got the party started with this stunner of a volley against Netherlands. Since then we've seen a similar effort from James Rodriguez and Lionel Messi has also stepped up with a gorgeous curler to beat Iran.

    Ray Whelan, head of Fifa partner Match Hospitality, has fled to escape arrest in Rio over alleged illegal World Cup ticket sales, Brazilian police say.

    The 64-year-old is officially considered a fugitive.

    Match Hospitality denies any wrongdoing by Mr Whelan and said he would co-operate with any investigation.

    More now on Brazil's poster boy Neymar, who says he was lucky not to be paralysed during their World Cup quarter-final against Colombia.

    The 22-year-old was fouled by Juan Zuniga and fractured a vertebra in his spine with the impact: "If it had been another two centimetres I could be in a wheelchair today," a visibly upset Neymar tells a news conference.

    "I won't say he came to injure me - I don't what was going on in his head - but everyone who understands football can see that it wasn't a normal challenge."
