Adam Lallana loves a run at defenders and he attempts to bulldoze his way through as England start the second half positively. The Peru defence stands firm to halt the Southampton man in his tracks. Glen Johnson almost does likewise soon after but the bouncing loose ball just inside the Peru area is hacked away as the full-back attempts to sneak through.

James Arlett: Has Hodgson got the bottle to leave Rooney behind? Like playing with 10 men at the moment.

Terry Lanfear: Johnson very poor, need to get Jones on. Rooney is very quiet and Welbeck either passes back or runs and loses the ball. Lallana looks lively.

Mustafa Mustafa: This team won't go anywhere. It doesn't have depth and talent, just a few good players.

Adam: Johnson is having a shocker. Poor touch. Sloppy passing and bad concentration. Against weaker sides why not play Milner or Ox at right back?

Rob, Sussex: Watching this has made sure I don't have any expectations in Brazil, there are teams there who will wipe the floor with them if we give the ball away as often.

Ben, London: It's embarrassing how negative England fans are. Almost every text is criticising a player or the team. How about you put your phone down and give them some support for a change.

"Dan loves to express himself, he is always looking to shoot and his goal tally reflects that."

Ex-England international Rodney Marsh on Twitter:, external Peru are the perfect team to play in a pre-World Cup practice match.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter:, external Oh I do like Sturridge. Got a self belief, often confused with arrogance, that's such a vital trait in a striker.

    England

Fancy some first-half stats? They are not the most thrilling to read, with England unsurprisingly dominating possession. They have had more shots too but, like Peru, just one shot on goal. Unlike Peru, that shot produced a goal.

Such was the lack of excitement on the pitch that a number of fans took to firing paper aeroplanes at each other, with the occasional cheer going up when one of them reached the pitch. It might not be the most exciting game of football, but Roy Hodgson will be happy. No injuries and a goal to the good with nothing in reply.

"England gifted Peru three opportunities in the first half. Do that against Italy or Uruguay and they're going to find themselves 3-0 down."

"England lead but not entirely convincing. Manager Roy Hodgson will be hoping to see Wayne Rooney have more impact in the second half."

  14. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

The referee blows his whistle and a largely forgettable first half, lit up by a fine Daniel Sturridge strike, is brought to a close.

  15. Postpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Closer from Peru as Luis Ramirez is played onside by Glen Johnson but the forward takes too long in possession and Joe Hart is quick off his line to get to the ball first. A better side and you feel England would have been punished there.

    Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at Wembley

"England have been disappointing from the set-piece. They need to realise that set-pieces are going to be absolutely vital in Brazil. They're not going to get many chances, especially against the likes of Italy and Uruguay, so they need to make them count."

  17. Postpublished at 20:45 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Roy Hodgson is up and out of his seat for the first time in this game as Peru come forward but poor control on the edge of the area by Andre Carrillo lets them down and England sweep up.

Marcus Bird:, external Great finish from Sturridge, that's why I think Rooney & Sturridge should take a shot anywhere near the box unless there's an easy pass.

Jon Evans:, external Us England fans always amuse me. Always so negative. We are playing fine and not going all out. After all, we have a World Cup to play.

Achuth Vasudevan:, external Johnson's lack of progress for the past five years is definitely because of a lack of proper competition. Shows the need for squad depth.

Daniel Sturridge slips when trying to bring a ball under control midway inside the Peru half, but the referee awards England a free-kick. Leighton Baines drives it in and Danny Welbeck gets his head to the ball, but his effort loops over the goal.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Wembley

"Daniel Sturridge had not been having the best first half but that goal was a perfect example of the quality he possesses and demonstrated throughout the season at Liverpool. Just what England required after a lifeless first half hour."
