That goal has brought England and the Wembley crowd to life as the hosts set about finding a quick second. They win a free-kick on the left which Steven Gerrard hits deep, but the ball sails over everyone's heads and the bar. Poor from Gerrard.

Mike at Wembley: Sat in crowd at Wembley. I'm texting you rather than watching the match. That says it all. Even Roy hasn't got out of his seat yet! And as I text, a goal! Typical!

Iain, Nottingham: My wife just looked up from her reading and said 'they should score a goal'. Exactly at that moment Sturridge whips it into the net. I'm trying to encourage her to talk more.

"That was an absolutely majestic strike by Daniel Sturridge, who cut in from the right-hand side and bent it into the top corner. We've seen him do that for Liverpool on more than one occasion."

Ah just what this game needed! Glen Johnson's throw finds Daniel Sturridge on the right side of the Peru area, he cuts inside and lifts a superb strike into the top corner from 20 yards. Goal number four in an England shirt for the in-form Liverpool man.

"Every chance manager Roy Hodgson had a bit of a cold sweat on as he was in very close proximity to Rinaldo Cruzado's wild challenge on England captain Steven Gerrard. Happily no harm done - but England need to spice things up a bit here. All a bit dull."

  6. Postpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker on Twitter:, external Missed opportunity to play with the World Cup ball. Probably contractual, but dim not to plan for such occasions.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:31 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Steven Gerrard is the first England player to work his way into the referee's book as he flies in on Jean Deza, studs showing. Yellow card.

Ean Smith: So what is there to be encouraged about? Not a thing! There is no midfield so Gerrard has already reverted to his 40-yard missed passes. Welbeck still looks like Bambi on ice. Rooney is running around like a headless chicken. Get out of the group? You're having a laugh.

Andrew, Richhill: Good to see Cahill and Jagielka starting together. They need to perfect their partnership as international success can only be built on a strong defence. The last time they played together for England was in October, they need plenty of game time together before the World Cup.

"Let's not forget that England's players have not played since 11 May. There are bound to be one or two cobwebs. Even the great Spain side can be pretty dull to watch at times."

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:28 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

First booking of the game as Rinaldo Cruzado is shown the yellow card after a lunging challenge on Steven Gerrard. He got none of the ball and all of the England captain's legs. Slight scare as Gerrard stays down for a few seconds but he is soon back up and ok to carry on.

I'll not lie. This is pretty turgid stuff at the moment, but it is England's first friendly for a few weeks. There is some quite robotic bashing of some little red and white clappers from the home crowd as they try to generate a bit of atmosphere.

Will Jenkyn-Jones:, external I just don't understand what Henderson brings. Overrated in my opinion, passes it backwards and sideways - get Wilshere on.

G Remon:, external It's very static from England. Long passes along the floor, need short, sharp passes.

John Pierce:, external The pace of the game is shocking. Intensity missing, passes awry. What did Hodgson see in training he wanted to bottle?

"England are having one or two problems with Peru dropping very deep. England have been a bit casual giving the ball away and as a result have had a couple of warnings."

Better from England as Adam Lallana bursts forward before stabbing a pass that squirms through the Peru defence to Daniel Sturridge, who drags his effort wide from close range.

  15. Postpublished at 20:20 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

A couple of nervy moments for England, who are first nearly caught out when Luis Ramirez splits the defence with a pass that Jean Deza is just beaten to by Joe Hart. A mistake by Wayne Rooney then sees Deza force a save out of Hart.

"England very much easing their way into this one - plenty of possession but nothing yet in the way of a serious threat. Or indeed serious action."

  17. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

    Danny Mills
BBC Radio 5 live at Wembley

"It's not been a high-tempo start by England and I suspect Roy has told his players 'let's pretend this is against Italy'. You cannot be tearing around 100% of the time. England have to be patient and wait for an opportunity. The result doesn't really matter in this game. It's the performance and style that is key."

  18. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

Peru spurn a free-kick midway inside the England half by gifting the ball to Adam Lallana, who quickly finds Wayne Rooney. The Manchester United forward lofts a long ball towards the area for Daniel Sturridge, but instead finds a Peru defender, who heads clear. The crowd at Wembley are subdued at the moment, not surprising given the lack of action.

Jack of all trades:, external Welbeck is going to be another Emile Heskey, awful touch, poor finishing and way too slow. Not good enough for England.

Chris Reid:, external Welbeck is so underrated, except by Hodgson. Him and Lallana to be the English stars of this World Cup.

Kerry Peter Parvin:, external Really bright start from Peru in this friendly. Which of these teams has qualified for the World Cup?

Danny Welbeck produces a good first touch to keep Leighton Baines's smart ball forward under control. He has his feet taken from him as he does so, giving England a free-kick some 30 yards from goal. Baines takes it but it is poor and Peru clear.
