"We've not really seen England play this formation. This is quite a new style and I think Roy has to be applauded for that. We will see England play in a style that Roy will be looking to play against Italy in the opening game in Brazil. Roy will have told his players 'don't give the ball away cheaply' because if they do that in Brazil, it could be five minutes before they get it back."

Peru, to their credit, have made a pretty positive start and almost fashion an opportunity when Andre Carrillo stabs a low pass into the area for Luis Ramirez to chase. Gary Cahill is wise to it and he shields the ball from the Peru forward, allowing Joe Hart to collect.

An unsurprisingly quiet opening few minutes as England patiently build, looking to work out the Peru weak spots. The first real foray into the visitors' final third sees Daniel Sturridge feed a pass to Wayne Rooney, who in turn tries to pick out Leighton Baines on the left, but a Peru defender gets across to stab the ball out for a throw.

"Gary Cahill is integral to England doing well at the World Cup. Phil Jagielka is still unproven fitness-wise so we have to look at that. What if Glen Johnson gets injured? I'm not doing my old position a disservice but you can get anyone to fill in at right-back. James Milner and Chris Smalling can play at right-back, it's not a massive issue."

Harry, Leicester: Look out for a certain Andre Carrillo. Talented young winger, can be very dangerous running at the defence and has a cracking right foot on him.

Alex, London: People say Sterling isn't as industrious as Welbeck, but he's played at wing-back for Liverpool before and played well there, so that argument doesn't really work I don't think.

England manager Roy Hodgson, speaking on ITV, says: "It's a strong team and has quite a lot of experience but there's great competition for places. There's a lot of football to be played and training to be done before we name the team for Manaus [against Italy].

"Danny Welbeck has played a lot of games in this wide position. There's a lot of competition there and we want to see all of the players as much as possible. But we trust and believe in Danny Welbeck. He has always done well in an England shirt and deserves his place."

The players are in the tunnel and readying themselves for heading out on to the pitch. England in their white home strip while Peru are decked out in red, which appears to feature a slightly darker red 'sash'. Interesting design.

"With regards to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones, who have not been named among the substitutes, both trained today and the feeling from the coaching staff is that it was not worth taking the chance tonight.

"Jon Flanagan and John Stones will travel to Miami on Sunday. The 23-man squad has to be confirmed soon but at the moment there will be no change to the original 23 that Roy Hodgson named."

Remember Roger Milla? The 38-year-old Cameroon super-sub who illuminated the 1990 World Cup with four goals and his famous corner flag celebration?

What was his reward for such a performance? A phone call from English side Walsall, newly relegated to England's old Division Four.

BBC Sport caught up with Milla to discuss his World Cup wiggle, that call from Walsall and his appearance on Wogan. You can read that feature, plus a host of other pre-tournament pieces, in the new features section on the BBC Sport World Cup page.

"England's Under-17s - who won the European Championship by beating Netherlands on penalties in the final in Malta last week - are currently doing a lap of honour at Wembley and receiving a very warm and deserved ovation."

Ex-Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann ‏on Twitter:, external Sterling and Barkley would go straight into Germany's team right now. They must have half a chance of getting into England's. They are special.

So what do we know about this Peru team? As mentioned earlier, none of their more well-known players - such as Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfan - feature, while a lot of youngster are given their chance to shine.

Of their more experienced players, goalkeeper Raul Fernandez, recently named best foreign player for his club FC Dallas, is likely to be in for a busy night, but he is expected to be protected by a five-man defence. Luis Ramirez, who plays in the "false nine" role, should provide the majority of Peru's creativity.

    Consider yourself mildly enlightened.

"England's players warming up and a little bit of a surprise that Liverpool's Raheem Sterling is not in the starting line-up ahead of Danny Welbeck - but very early days in manager Roy Hodgson's World Cup planning and plenty of time for all the members of his squad to get some action over the next fortnight."

Adam Jenson:, external How on earth is Welbeck starting ahead of Sterling tonight?

Jenade Sharma:, external Sterling's a brilliant player, but he doesn't quite provide the industry Welbeck does! Balance is so important.

Hi:, external 10 goals in 24 starts isn't bad for goodness sake. I'm tired of this criticism of Welbeck.

  18. Postpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 30 May 2014

It is a youthful bench with Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, John Stones and Jon Flanagan all on there. All no doubt eager to make an impression tonight. As expected, no Luke Shaw in the side after Roy Hodgson confirmed yesterday the Southampton man has a bit of a cold.

Ex-England left-back Phil Neville on Twitter:, external "Most important thing tonight - no injuries. I only see two or three places up for grabs - centre mid/right/left wing for the Italy game - the rest of the team is settled and picks itself.

"People are saying Sterling after his great season. He will be a great impact sub in the first game in the heat and I see him playing v Uruguay and Costa Rica."

    Ex-England defender Danny Mills
    BBC Radio 5 live

"The England training will still be intense and at this time the players will not be thinking about potentially getting injured. It's about putting in a performance.

"There are certain players that will play against Italy even if they have two bad games in the next three matches, but for the others they have to put everything into it today and they have to give their heart and soul.

"Going to a World Cup and not playing must be very disheartening. Everyone wants to be in the team."
