"Wembley is currently quiet ahead of England's friendly meeting with Peru - at least in comparison to scenes in the vicinity earlier when Carl Froch and George Groves weighed in for their IBF and WBA super-middleweight rematch, which is held here tomorrow.

"There will be plenty of noise later when England's World Cup preparations move up a gear - and manager Roy Hodgson intends to field a strong side before the squad flies to Miami over the weekend to continue their preparations for Brazil."

So the first of three chances England players have to make an impression is against tonight's opponents Peru.

Probably better known for Paddington Bear and Machu Picchu than football these days, Peru - ranked 42nd in the world alongside the Cape Verde Islands - are hardly likely to pose England much of a test.

Nevertheless it is an opportunity for Roy Hodgson to experiment with players and formations before they jet out to Miami on Sunday for their final two warm-up games against Honduras and Ecuador.

"You know a major international football tournament is almost here when England fans think it entirely normal to dress in flags of St George and release the latest challenge to World In Motion, Three Lions and Vindaloo.

"This attempt by Testsite MC is not exactly proving a hit with the early arrivers on Wembley Way, but his song is called High Hopes and that reflects the mood of optimism surrounding Roy Hodgson's men as they ramp up their preparations for the World Cup with the visit of Peru."

"No-one's place is guaranteed" is a managerial cliche up there with the best of them but it seems in Roy Hodgson's case those words do ring true.

Only six of the 23 on the plane to Brazil have previous World Cup experience and even though Hodgson has had a decent amount of time with his squad in recent weeks, he claims he is no closer to what he considers his best 11.

"There are senior players who will undoubtedly feature but there are a number of places around those senior players that are up for grabs," he said yesterday.

    Let battle commence.

England v Peru. A fixture that at any other time would hardly set pulses racing, but then, this is not any other time.

In exactly 365 hours, England's 2014 World Cup campaign will get under way when they take on Italy. The hopes of a nation resting on their shoulders.

Before then Roy Hodgson's men play three warm-up games. Three auditions for the 23 players in the squad to stake their claim for a place in the starting XI come 14 June.

It's only a friendly? Try telling that to the likes of Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana.
