"There is no doubt that he is a fantastic player with great natural ability, but does he have it in him to become the heartbeat of our national side?"

  13. Phil McNulty Q&Apublished at 15:06 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Eddie Burdak asks BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty: "Was Stevie Gerrard really the right choice for captain? He may in the past have been able to drag Liverpool to the next round but he has never done that for the country, never put it on the line. In fact England has got worse and worse with him as skipper."

McNulty replies: "Absolutely the right choice as captain of this squad. Who else would you have for a start? He is respected, experienced and no-one would seriously suggest he should not be in the squad.

"What I do accept, however, is that he has not had a great influence on this tournament and it would not surprise me if he decided to retire from international football. Also - have England got worse with him as captain? They've actually been better here than in South Africa four years ago."

  18. Phil McNulty's Q&Apublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Paul Larman asks: "Why can't we accept that we were in a really tough group. Only two teams can qualify. Either Italy or Uruguay are going to miss out so does that make them terrible sides? Spain are already out, are they rubbish?"

Phil McNulty says: "I think there is an acceptance of that and pretty much all of us in the media were complimentary of England's performance even in defeat against Italy.

"No-one can question we came up short against Uruguay though, when old failings in defence and an inability to retain possession came back to haunt England. What hardly anyone factored in was the rise of Costa Rica. It has been a classic case of people watching each other and not noticing the outsiders coming through on the outside."
