"The progression they have had under Roy has been amazing, so if he can keep the group together for another two years it's going to be exciting and they are going to learn after what has just happened."

Striker Rickie Lambert says his World Cup debut was one of the lowest points of his career. The 32-year-old came on as a substitute in England's 2-1 defeat by Uruguay on Thursday. England's exit from the tournament was confirmed on Friday as Costa Rica beat Italy.

Lambert told the Football Association website:, external "It was probably the worst moment of my career when the final whistle went and we were knocked out of the World Cup. It was horrible.

"Maybe I might look back in years to come and think 'I've played in a World Cup', that will live with me forever. But I can't remember any moments that are as bad as that."

Peter Shilton on Harry Redknapp's claim that some players did not want to play for England: "What can you say? It's ridiculous that players can't be bothered but maybe somewhere along the way maybe that's the root of why we're not doing so well at the moment.

"I don't think you can knock their commitment or attitude but maybe there's one or two who can't be bothered. It's probably a minority.

"I can understand frustrations at times but it's your country and you should be proud of it."

Alex Ridler:, external England looked lethargic compared to other teams in the World Cup. How about a winter break?

John Moore:, external With all the TV money focused on Premier League clubs, it's ruining the development of English players. Cash must be better dispersed.

Ethio:, external Young players should go abroad for experience. Also, the price for England players is too high, there are better and cheaper options.

Andrew in Richhill: The FA should set up a 'B' League that mirrors the top four tiers of English football. It would allow more young, home-grown British players to have the chance to play more football and get more experience at their clubs. It would stop unnecessary loans and would ultimately mean that clubs and the England national team have a larger pool of players to choose from.

David Singh in Teesside: If Roy Hodgson is any manager he will drop the entire team and give all the other players a chance to start. We have nothing to play for yet the other players might actually try to prove a point?

What could Roy Hodgson have done differently to improve England's chances of progressing to the knockout stages? It's all about the tactics, according to Lineker.

"In terms of his tactics, personally, I believe Roy got it wrong," says the Match of the Day presenter.

"I think a system that suits this kind of England better is a 4-3-3. He tried to play with two players in the centre. I think it is too big an ask for two players.

"The problem with 4-2-3-1 is it very quickly turns into a 4-4-2, or at least 4-4-1-1, and we ended up with flat lines and people getting in between us. I think we would have been better with three midfield players and then attack with three players because you have got to give yourself a chance defensively."

  12. Lineker on England - The badpublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

But, of course, there was plenty that went wrong for Roy Hodgson's men during their defeats against Italy and Uruguay.

"Defensively, we were simply not good," adds Gary Lineker. "It was always the fear before the tournament that we were lightweight at the back.

"We have very little depth in defence as well. Our attacking full-backs... neither of them are naturally defensive. And, possibly, there was not enough protection in front of the back two."

So, two games and eight days - that's all it took for England to exit the tournament.

"What a humiliation," says Match of the Day's Gary Lineker, but the former England striker believes there are some positives to be taken from England's performances.

"Well, I thought a few youngsters had decent tournaments," he says. "They will be better for the experience if it doesn't damage them too much. There were a lot of good statistics in terms of ball retention, in terms of domination of matches, in terms of shots at goal."
