  1. Shilton backs Hodgsonpublished at 09:57 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton says the Football Association should stick with manager Roy Hodgson.

"I think Roy's done a good job," he says on Sportsweek. "He's been bold; he's brought youngsters in. I think he's looking to the future. I don't know what other players he could have picked different to the squad. I thought the effort and the commitment was there.

"Overall, Roy needs to stay in. He's got a squad there and they're getting a bit of spirit together. Steven Gerrard is a fantastic captain, a great professional, but sometimes you think: was he right to be in that defensive role, because he isn't a defender?

"Sometimes, that's the sort of thing that can swing games, when you miss a tackle and things like that. You can't get blood out of stone sometimes, but I think Roy went close with the players he's got."

More from Howard Wilkinson on England: "The manager doesn't have enough players to pick from. The best countries in the World Cup have a minimum of 50 players in the top league.

"I think after Australia and Algeria, we're down there with the fewest caps and lowest average age. You look at players in that team with experience and there's not that many.

"We are going into these big tournaments and are struggling. We are going to struggle if we don't do something about those factors."

More from Harry Redknapp on England's problems: "We [managers] get judged on what we do as a club. The fans don't care what part of the world they [players] come from.

"It's a problem at youth level. The best youth teams in the country have lots of foreigners. I grew up at West Ham, where all the kids were local. We didn't even have kids from up north. Now, the likes of Chelsea and Man City have an awful lot of foreign lads."

  5. England no chance in 2022 - Redknapppublished at 09:43 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

QPR boss Harry Redknapp is sceptical about England's chances of winning the 2022 World Cup: "Are we going to win the World Cup in Doha? Good luck. Not a prayer. Get in the real world.

"We went to South Africa with a good bunch of players. We went to Brazil and should have won the group."

  6. Campbell happy to help Englandpublished at 09:41 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Sol Campbell on whether he would be willing to join England's coaching set-up: "Of course I would. There's me and other guys out there, some new people with fresh ideas to bring their experiences. I've been there, seen it and done it.

"Sometimes you have to change the personnel, reshuffle. Sometimes you can miss intelligent, insightful guys who can bring something different. You don't always have to change the manager."

  7. Campbell criticises England defencepublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Former Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell says England's defence needed to "smell the danger" against Uruguay.

"If you give world-class centre forwards space to move in, they will kill you," he said on BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek of England's 2-1 defeat. "What would have happened if Luis Suarez was fully fit? You've got to do more. You've got to do more running, more thinking.

"It's all about the moments in the game. Smell the danger first. It's all about where you are positionally. We haven't been streetwise, we haven't smelt that danger and we didn't show the nous you need."

  8. Wilkinson - England need to changepublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Former England caretaker manager Howard Wilkinson believes England have to change if they want to improve on the international stage.

"It is depressing if you take the attitude that you can't do anything about it but we can," he says on Sportsweek. "I would ask foreign owners if they think a good English team is good for English football. If the answer is 'yes', then the next step is to think about how we go about it.

"If we keep doing what we've been doing, we'll keep getting what we've been getting so you have to change. It's as simple as that."

  9. Redknapp on Englandpublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

QPR boss Redknapp told Sportsweek that during his managerial career two or three international players told him they did not want to play for England.

He said: "They would come to me and say 'gaffer, get me out of the game'. It happened on quite a few occasions."

    BBC Radio 5 live

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has been giving his thoughts on England's early World Cup exit.

"We were beaten by two very average teams," he tells BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek. "It was one of the worst Italian teams I've seen in years. For Costa Rica to be top of the group tells you everything.

"But I'm not sure what we could have done differently. We've been through some good managers but for some reason we don't get results."
