John Perkins:, external Tuesday's England match should be the last with Rooney and Gerard. Too much is expected of them and they haven't delivered. Move on.

Harry Partridge:, external English players aren't good enough for the Premier League, so more need to go abroad, with those doing so given priority for the national side.

Paddy Emmerson:, external Too many foreign players, we need quotas. No, the coaching at youth level isn't good enough, sort that and the quality will be there.

  3. Argentina tipped for the finalpublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

BBC Sport commentator Steve Bower says on BBC Radio "Without Lionel Messi, Argentina wouldn't have six points but it's not fair to compare him with Ronaldo in this World Cup. Argentina have got better options than Portugal. Messi has got better players round him than Ronaldo has.

"You wouldn't rule out Argentina being in the final in the Maracana, especially with Messi playing like that."

Brian Lee:, external You want an England team of the future? Scrap academies and let the young lads play competitive football. Academies are jails.

Luke Parsons:, external We need to keep this team. Look at Germany - they've had pretty much the same core squad for years and they always do well.

Former Reading and Blackburn striker Jason Roberts says he sympathises with Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Portugal's clash with the USA.

"There's a lot of pressure on him - he's only got two goals in 12 World Cup games - but you need the team behind you," Roberts tells BBC Radio 5 live.

"We've spoken about how he's going to be marked today, two men on him, but that's how you would play against Portugal. If you can deal with Ronaldo, you do put yourself in a position to win a game. I do feel for him... people just crowd you out."

    USA v Portugal, Group G (23:00 BST)

    United States v Portugal

Mark Lawrenson: "I am going to go for a shock and pick the United States to beat Portugal. Jurgen Klinsmann does not have the most talented squad at the tournament but they are greater than the sum of their parts.

"Portugal had a shocking start to their World Cup against Germany, and it will be down to Cristiano Ronaldo to save their tournament. I just don't think he is in the shape he needs to be to make a difference."

    Lawro's prediction: USA 1-0 Portugal

South Korea v Algeria, Group H (20:00 BST)

    South Korea v Algeria

Mark Lawrenson: "This is the game that both these sides will see as winnable, but that might mean what could have been an open game will turn into a much tighter one.

"I think Algeria might edge it, but both teams will be heading home at the end of the group stage."

Lawro's prediction: South Korea 0-1 Algeria

  9. Today at the tournamentpublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

    Belgium v Russia, Group H (17:00 BST)

    Belgium v Russia

Mark Lawrenson: "I tipped both of these teams to win their opening games and I think they will both stay unbeaten for a bit longer.

"This game will give us the first indication of how good the Belgians might be, and they are a team that everybody is looking forward to watching."

    Lawro's prediction: Belgium 1-1 Russia

The final set of second-round group games could see the World Cup hopes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal dashed.

Having been demolished by Germany, the Iberians know defeat by Group G rivals USA would end their involvement - and a draw would leave them with much to do in their final game.

But the USA have kept only one clean sheet in their past nine World Cup games, so can they keep the Real Madrid man quiet?

Alex in Bristol: England's preparation is all wrong - they should take a leaf out of the English RFU and play friendlies against the best teams in the world, rather than the likes of Honduras and Ecuador. If they had competed against the likes of Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Holland before the World Cup and seen the level of play that is required to be on par with these teams, things might have been a whole lot different.

Simon: The last chance England had of winning the World Cup was in 1990. Soon after came the Premier League with all its money and foreign players. Just a coincidence? Surely not!

Everyone likes a bit of nostalgia, so let's go back to the 1994 World Cup when Russia striker Oleg Salenko made history against Cameroon by becoming the first - and, to date, only - player to score five goals in a World Cup match.

Salenko went on to claim the Golden Boot with six goals alongside Bulgaria's Hristo Stoichkov, becoming the only player to do so from a team eliminated in the first round.

This is Russia's third appearance at the finals since the break-up of the Soviet Union, and they have previously failed to qualify for the knockout stages.
