... talking of England. Roy Hodgson's team have only got their hand luggage left to pack, but they still have Tuesday's fixture with Costa Rica to contend with before they head to the airport.

The England manager and his captain are due to speak to the media at 17:00 BST today and we'll keep you up to speed with anything and everything from the England camp.

In the meantime, here's chief football writer Phil McNulty on England's long and painful goodbye.

  2. 1990 revisitedpublished at 08:25 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

England weren't always this bad in World Cups, you know? Believe it or not, they got to the semi-finals in 1990. There's even video evidence. In fact, if you pop BBC Two on now, you'll see some of it in the FIFA World Cup official film.

  3. Argentina - the stats so farpublished at 08:21 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Argentina have a formidable record in the World Cup group stages, winning 11 and losing just one of their last 14 World Cup group games and, impressively, they have scored 27 goals and conceded only five in the process.

And Lionel Messi is starting to replicate his club form for his country, scoring eight goals in his last seven appearances for Argentina. Indeed, the forward has now scored 40 goals for his country.

And one more Messi-meric stat for you: Messi has scored two goals in two games at this World Cup, which is already more than in his eight matches at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups combined (one).

Phil in the North: World Cup best bits: The Chile anthem sang with passion and feeling!! Also their performances on the field. Sterling and Barkley showed they are class acts for the future.

"Give it to him and pray", said Jonathan Pearce. It turned out to be a top tip from the BBC Sport commentator as Argentina scraped a 1-0 win over Iran courtesy of Lionel Messi's stunning goal in stoppage time. The win saw the much-fancied South American's through to the knockout stage. They're not quite firing on all cylinders, but with Messi in your side, you always have a chance.

While Miroslav Klose had a night to remember, Edin Dzeko will not look back on Saturday with such fondness. The Manchester City striker could not prevent Bosnia-Hercegovina from crashing out of their first World Cup as they went down 1-0 to Nigeria.

It's hard not to feel for the striker, though. He had a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside at a crucial point in the match before Peter Odemwingie scored what proved to be the winner for the Super Eagles.
