Former England striker Alan Shearer on Luis Suarez

"Staggering. I could not believe it. The pictures are pretty damning and if found guilty they should hammer him. He has built up his reputation over the last 12 months and to come into the tournament and do that, I am lost for words.

"Found guilty at Ajax, found guilty at Liverpool and if found guilty here, he should be hammered.

"I can understand why the referee did not see it clearly but they can look at video evidence. There is no way he can get away with that, it is pretty clear. What on earth is he thinking of?"

Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini speaking to Gazzetta: "The disparity in judgement has been evident.

"Claudio Marchisio's sending off was ridiculous but more so the fact that Luis Suarez wasn't sent off. There's the will to protect champions but the referee should have shown him a red card.

"There's a clear simulation after, a clear sign that he had done something that he wasn't supposed to.

"The gesture is clear. Referees document themselves on players and Suarez has a very clear history. The referee has given a clear address, he hasn't spoken throughout the game.

"We are not happy with how things have gone but we were the only ones to deserve to progress to the next round."

"Awaiting clarification from Fifa on the Luis Suarez situation.

"In theory players must adhere to the World Cup regulations which state: 'Disciplinary incidents are dealt with in compliance with the Fifa Disciplinary Code in force and all relevant circulars and directives, with which the participating member associations undertake to comply...3. In addition, the players agree in particular to: a) respect the spirit of fair play, non-violence and the authority of the match officials; b) behave accordingly.

"So it would appear that Suarez has perhaps breached that code. But Fifa's disciplinary committee is independent and it may take a formal complaint to be made in order for them to look at this. Defined rules on retrospective action, as Fifa give to England under their discretion, aren't clear as it stands."

David Lewis: Luis Suarez should be in prison - not presented to the world as any kind of role model or hero.

Mark, Manchester: Would Suarez ban for 'biting' be for all competitions? Surely certain actions and bans have to be universally supported.

JC, Sussex: Suarez was odds on with a respectable bookmaker for a move to Barcelona. With the same bookmaker those odds have drifted. Has he cost himself a massive move with that 'bite'?
