Extra points to you if you know who Willie Groves is.

The Scot was the first £100 player, transferring from West Brom to Aston Villa in 1893. I'm not sure what a ton will get you in today's market, but it's certainly worth checking out the history of the British record transfer fee in this BBC Sport feature.

David: I once had a lovely Labrador retriever called Shep. He was a great dog but had a tendency to run away, so I got a GPS collar for him. I had to move away for work and advertised him for adoption, imagine my amazement when Radamel Falcao turned up to adopt him. Well, anyway as I miss Shep so much I often log in and check his GPS location to see where he is. And guess what? This morning he was at Old Trafford!!!!

  3. Shawcross to Everton?published at 09:28 British Summer Time 1 September 2014

"Ryan Shawcross to Everton more agent chat than club talk. Everton not interested and there's no way Stoke would sell him on deadline day."

Blaize Vincent:, external Worst TDD signing in recent years is Park Chu Young to Arsenal. Played him once against Man Utd to sell shirts.

Steven P:, external Worst Arsenal deadline day signing was Kim Kallstrom - signed with a dodgy back and didn't debut till late March.

BBC Sport's Frank Keogh: "Manchester United are leading the race to sign striker Radamel Falcao from Monaco, if you believe most British bookmakers.

"United are odds-on, at about 4-6, with last night's favourites Manchester City now out to 5-4 shots. Real Madrid are next on 4-1, with Arsenal at 8s.

"Of course, Falcao could stay where he is. That's rated a 3-1 chance."

BBC Wiltshire understands Swindon's Louis Thompson is being sold to Norwich but will be loaned back to Town for the rest of the season. The transfer fee is understood to be £600,000 rising to £1.3m.

We're also expecting Tottenham striker Jon Obika to join the Robins for around £200,000.

"If Arsenal don't sign a striker today I cannot see how they can compete for the title. Even with Oliver Giroud fit they'd look short in comparison to their rivals. Wenger gave the appearance of being indecisive over Mario Balotelli and Loic Remy; he cannot end the day with Yaya Sanogo as his best fit striker."

  10. Diarra to QPR?published at 09:14 British Summer Time 1 September 2014

    Lassana Diarra

It could be an interesting day at QPR then. But did you expect any different?

We're still waiting for confirmation from both the West London club and Lokomotiv Moscow after Harry Redknapp declared he had signed Lassana Diarra on Saturday.

Diarra, 29, played for Arsenal and Chelsea before Redknapp signed him for Portsmouth in 2008.

Redknapp said: "Lassana Diarra has signed and I'm delighted to have him. I had him at Portsmouth and he is a terrific player."

  11. The latest from QPRpublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2014

BBC Sport's Mandeep Sanghera: "Not surprisingly, QPR boss Harry Redknapp is being linked with plenty of players, especially ones associated with former club Tottenham.

"Spurs midfielder Sandro is someone QPR are interested in and they are keen on bringing the Brazilian in on a permanent basis.

"But, as it stands, there is not much mileage in reports of moves for Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon, Toronto striker Jermain Defoe and Ajax forward Kolbeinn Sigthorsson."

Sam Hicks from Bournemouth: As an AFC Bournemouth supporter we need to keep hold of Matt Ritchie and sign Andrew Surman and Johnny Russell.

Narek, walking to work in London: There is sense in Falcao to Man United. If Hernandez and Welbeck are leaving, RvP being past his best and more fragile than a glass... United need another class striker. Not saying it should be their top priority through.

Mat in London: We're an hour and a half into deadline day and no one has said anything about Kalou to Arsenal. Does tradition mean nothing any more?

  13. Deal offpublished at 09:07 British Summer Time 1 September 2014

Here's some early-morning news for you...

Sporting Gijon striker Stefan Scepovic has pulled out of a transfer to Celtic. The 24-year-old Serbian international had agreed a four-year deal with the Scottish champions, who had arranged a medical and work permit for him.

However, Celtic were informed on Sunday that Scepovic had decided against a move to Scotland.

Matt in Sheffield: Ryan Shawcross to Everton today - local papers and gossip all over Stoke.

Sam in London: Just saw Nicolas Anelka hopelessly studying the tube map. He asked me if Loftus Road was near Queens Park on the Bakerloo Line.

It sounds like Phil's Uncle Bill is the man in the know today.

    Mohamed DiameImage source, PA

BBC Sport's Frank Keogh: "West Ham are most likely to see one player in and one out, with midfielder Mohamed Diame a potential departure and Hull City among the clubs interested in his signature.

"Alex Song, who joined on loan from Barcelona on Saturday, was the Hammers' eighth summer signing, but they are keen to bring in a defender, with Micah Richards - who only played twice for Manchester City last season - on their radar."

BBC World Service reporter John Bennett: "Former West Bromwich Albion attacking midfielder Morgan Amalfitano will be hoping for a move today.

"After returning to Marseille following his loan spell at the Hawthorns last season, the 29-year-old had a very public bust-up with club's new coach Marcelo Bielsa.

"Amalfitano has been told he's not allowed to train with the rest of the senior squad.

"This summer he's been linked with QPR and West Ham but the French press are predicting he'll move to Saint-Etienne before the deadline."

"It is like a domino effect on transfer deadline day. Loic Remy has left QPR, maybe Jermain Defoe will go there? There will be lots of movement in the strikers position.

"No-one understands why Arsene Wenger hasn't signed a striker yet. Yaya Sanogo, is he up to it? He is a young player. He has had two games so far this season and already everyone is saying he is not good enough."
