Brilliant save! The best in the business at ghosting into space, Thomas Muller, does exactly that to meet Juan Bernat's cross from the left with a stinging header but Joe Hart s equal to it, pushing it away with one hand. Fantastic save from the England number one.
From his lofty position high in the stands, City boss Manuel Pellegrini has seen his side get better with time as this opening 15 minutes has wore on.
City have had 60% of the ball so far.
There have already been three goals in the Championship and there's more bad news for Fulham, who are trailing 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. Felix Magath's side have just one point from their six games so far and sit bottom of the Championship table and are behind to Britt Assombalonga's sixth goal of the season. In the other game Derby are back on level terms at Blackburn after Jamie Ward cancelled out Ben Marshall's early opener.
Chelsea kicking into gear. Eden Hazard - described as a potential 'great of his generation' by Jose Mourinho this week - cuts in from the left in familiar fashion and hammers in a low shot which is turned away by Roman Neustadter. The hosts looking slick.
The game has gone a bit flat at Bayern after that fast start - but hang on! David Silva plays in Edin Dzeko with a smart reverse pass, the angel is very tight but Dzeko shoots anyway, forcing Manuel Neuer into a smart save low down.
At the other end, Robert Lewandowski sells one man with a dummy and looks set to charge into the box, but Bacary Sagna shuts him out with a fine challenge.
Schalke captain Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was booked by referee Ivan Bebek as he protested against that goal. Cesc Fabregas was alert to close down Max Meyer, but he slid in and seemed to take out Meyer, man before ball. Still, play to the whistle, and a composed finish from Fabregas, who has started life at Chelsea brilliantly.
And there is the opener for Chelsea! A slack touch in midfield is pounced on by Cesc Fabregas, who finds Eden Hazard on his left. Hazard drives inside to open up the space and then plays it back to Fabregas, and he buries his first goal for Chelsea.
He fouled Max Meyer in the build-up though - no doubt about it. Schalke aren't happy and they are unlucky to be behind.
Big chance for Chelsea! Strong stuff from Didier Drogba as he holds off two men and works it across the face of the area, Ramires steps inside to open up the angle but tops his shot, a total miskick and it barely reaches keeper Ralf Fahrmann.
Thomas Muller and Pep Guardiola both thought they should have had a penalty for that first-minute challenge from Bacary Sagna - not for me. Contact was very minimal. Xabi Alonso makes a lot more contact with a sliding challenge in midfield and is lucky not to be booked.
Schalke start well at Stamford Bridge, with Sidney Sam a busy presence down their right wing. No chances to mention yet.
Bacary Sagna just got a piece of Thomas Muller as he went in on goal there. A vital intervention. City lucky not to be behind already.
Formation fans take note - Bayern Munich are playing three at the back - and they should be ahead!
Inside a minute, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski link up to free Thomas Muller, he skips round Joe Hart but stabs into the side-netting with the goal gaping! What a start for Bayern...
And after a short delay we are rolling in Munchen. Fantastic noise in the Allianz.
Game on at the Bridge.
The referees are sticking with these rank grey shorts then! Got to go...
Manchester City's efforts in Europe this season are set to be hampered somewhat, as they have been forced to name a smaller squad than usual.
City were fined £49m, £32m of which is suspended, and can only name a 21-man Champions League squad after failing Uefa financial fair play rules.
However, as City pointed out in May, they only fielded 21 players in the Champions League last season, were not planning to spend a net amount of more than £49m on players this summer and expected their wage bill to be lower next season anyway.
So there.
David Silva and Xabi Alonso embrace in the Allianz Arena tunnel. What a player - what players for that matter. As good as Xabi Alonso is, there's no place for him wearing the number three shirt in midfield...
Here we come...
Paul Moore:, external City setting up for a draw. Bayern will break City's weak defence at will. 4-0 Bayern I'm afraid.
Sadozie:, external Very optimistic for decent result against German champions in the absence of world's best wingers! 2-1 City
Eyobel Gomini:, external City to win 2-1, Aguero to come of the bench and score the winner!
Fans of goals could well be in luck tonight - none of Manchester City's 20 Champions League games have ended goalless. They have only kept three clean sheets in these 20 games.
Manchester City's games were also the most prolific in last season's Champions League group stages: they produced 28 goals (18 scored, 10 conceded).
Attack! Attack! Attack Attack Attack!
