Tonight also sees the return of Ashley Cole to our shores.

The former England left-back made nearly 400 Premier League appearances for Chelsea and Arsenal and has settled in well to life in the Italian capital. It will be odd to see him patrolling the left flank for the Romans. He's not got it easy either, Jesus Navas is up against him.

  2. Costa gamblepublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 30 September 2014

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says it is a "risk" starting striker Diego Costa tonight.

Costa, 25, has a fragile hamstring and was a substitute when Chelsea drew their opening group game with Schalke. But he does score. All the time.

"There is a risk, yes, but he plays," said Mourinho about Costa, who has scored eight goals in seven league and cup appearances this season.

"Hopefully everything goes well. It's an important game for us."

As expected, Paris St-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic misses tonight's game against Barcelona because of a heel injury, with Lucas Moura and Edinson Cavani starting in attack.

Lionel Messi and Neymar are in the Barcelona side, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen replacing Claudio Bravo in goal, while Pedro Rodriguez is picked over Munir El Haddadi on the right of attack.

PSG XI: Sirigu, Marquinhos, Maxwell, Van der Wiel, David Luiz, Lucas, Thiago Motta, Matuidi, Verratti, Pastore, Cavani.

Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen, Mascherano, Jordi Alba, Daniel Alves, Mathieu, Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta, Pedro Rodríguez, Messi, Neymar.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho stays true to his word and takes a "risk" on the fitness of striker Diego Costa for his side's trip to Sporting Lisbon. His side features two changes from the weekend, with Andreas Schurrle and Filipe Luis coming in for Cesar Azpilicueta and Willian.

The Sporting Lisbon side features Nani, the winger who is on loan from Manchester United.

Scotty Doman:, external CL would be nice but PL has to be Chelsea's priority this season. But with Costa's goals then why not both?

Phoenixville:, external Regardless of their domestic form, Mourinho won't deliver European success to Chelsea

Ashley Cole is only the 11th English player to play for a non-British side in the Champions League.

Erm Steve McManaman, Owen Hargreaves (ish), er David Beckham, Michael Owen? Jonathan Woodgate? Who else?

    No really - I don't know...

"Manchester City will be hoping to make a strong Champions League statement tonight after the disappointment of losing their opening Champions League game away to Bayern Munich in stoppage time.

"Roma, who have former England full-back Ashley Cole in their side, opened with an impressive 5-1 win at home to CSKA Moscow - and will see this game as a real opportunity to put themselves alongside Bayern as favourites to qualify for the knockout phase."

Manchester City have never played Roma in an official game before, but the Italian side will have bad memories of recent trips to Manchester.

Rivals United beat Roma 1-0 twice at Old Trafford on their way to the 2008 trophy, but the year before was the real kicker.

Roma faced United in the quarter-finals and opened up a 2-1 win in the first leg in the Eternal City - with Paul Scholes seeing red. But United then went crazy in the second leg, going 4-0 up at the break and eventually winning 7-1.

    Even Alan Smith scored...

Manchester City have only progressed from their Champions League group once - and that opening defeat by Bayern Munich means that another loss tonight would leave them in real trouble once more.

So City fans, what is the priority for you this season? Another Premier League title? Considerable progress on Europe's biggest stage? Remembering Yaya Toure's birthday cake?

And Chelsea fans, is getting your hands back on the league title the main aim under Jose this season? Or do you want another shot at Champions League glory?

Is the double on the cards for either of you?

It's not all about the glitz and glamour of the Champions League. There is a packed programme in the spit and sawdust that is the Championship, with Billy McKinlay in charge of Watford for the first time at home to Brentford.

Leaders Norwich start with a one-point cushion at the summit against Charlton, while second-placed Nottingham Forest will be looking to stretch their unbeaten league start to the campaign to 10 games away to Wigan.

Elsewhere, Mick McCarthy's in-form Ipswich hope to make it five Championship wins in a row when they face Sheffield Wednesday away.

Chelsea - who seem to have pretty much a settled XI these days - make just two changes from the 3-0 win over Aston Villa. Filipe Luis is in at left-back while Andre Schurrle replaces Willian.

Chelsea XI: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Filipe Luis; Matic, Fabregas; Schurrle, Oscar, Hazard; Diego Costa

Manchester City and Roma come into tonight's showdown in very different moods.

City played reasonably well in their opener away at Bayern Munich but a late winner from their former defender Jerome Boateng rather took the jam from their doughnut. Not a disaster by any means but a defeat all the same.

On the other hand Roma, on their return to the Champions League, thrashed CSKA Moscow 5-1, with former Arsenal misfit Gervinho scoring twice.

It could well be a case of one of these sides joining Bayern Munich in the last 16. City need a win tonight...

Champions League football is already up and running in the East, with Bayern Munich facing CSKA Moscow in Manchester City's group.

The match is being played behind closed doors at the Khimki Arena after the Russian champions were punished by governing body Uefa for racist chanting by their fans last season.

It is currently 1-0 to Bayern with 10 minutes left - that man Thomas Muller on the spot from the spot.

Barcelona have not conceded a goal in 630 minutes of football this season - not a stat that will be welcome reading for a Paris St-Germain side facing the Spanish giants without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish striker is out with a heel injury, but PSG will take comfort from the fact they are tough to beat on home soil, having not lost at Parc des Princes in their last 29 matches.

Barcelona are currently top of Group F with three points, with PSG on one, the same as Ajax, who travel to Cyprus for their game against Apoel tonight.

Elsewhere, Schalke host Maribor in Group G while Porto travel to Shakhtar Donetsk and BATE host Athletic Bilbao in Group H.

Across Europe on the Iberian peninsula - also conquered by the Romans in days gone by - Chelsea look to continue their own European history with a win against Sporting Lisbon.

Chelsea were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Schalke in the first game in Group G, while Lisbon also drew in Maribor.

Their goalscorer that night? None other than former Manchester United man Nani. A repeat this evening?
