'Cheer up Gordon Strachan!' is the chant from the England fans. I wonder what Strachan will make of this performance? Spirited in the first half but never really threatening England.

He once famously brushed off a question by saying he had a yoghurt going out of date in his fridge. Has he got more pressing concerns tonight?

Derby forward Johnny Russell is on for his debut.

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2014

Rickie Lambert - who scored the winner against Scotland last year - is on for the last 10 minutes. He has replaced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

And those late goals in Manchester and Vigo were pretty much the last moments of significant action.

Germany and Portugal take the bragging rights with the same scoreline against

It's also full-time in Dublin where Ireland thumped the United States 4-1.

"Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been superb this evening. Some strong runs and, although he has given away the ball a couple of times, if he can continue this form for Arsenal he will cement his place in this England side."

As I say that, England should score. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain burst clear on the right, cuts it back and James Milner and Jack Wilshere get in each other's way. Wilshere hits his shot against Milner and away.

Seconds later Raheem Sterling gets in on the left flank but his low cross is hooked out for a corner.

"Things could have got very, very ugly for Scotland. But since some attacking changes from Gordon Strachan their performance has improved and they have averted what could have ended up being a hammering."

England seeing the game out, keeping the ball at the back and in the midfield with ease now. It's all falling very flat.

  8. Late goal dramapublished at 21:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2014

Toni Kroos has broken the deadlock in Vigo for Germany to give them a late goal against Spain with two minutes remaining.

Just as that's settled in the back of the net - Portugal have also taken a late lead in the first minute of stoppage time against Argentina at Old Trafford through Adrien Silva.

On Friday night Scotland were all about early crosses and pressure. There's nothing of that tonight, as a long spell of possession ends up coming back inside time and again. They eventually force a corner and Steven Naismith heads over. Off balance, on the stretch.

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"There is a feel of this game running down the clock now. Substitutes being introduced at regular intervals, a resigned air among Scotland's fans and England still a threat on the break, perhaps even more now with the introduction of Liverpool's Raheem Sterling.

"If there is any consolation for Scotland here, it is that their big priority from this international break was to beat the Republic of Ireland in the pivotal Euro 2016 qualifier and that was achieved successfully."

James: Rooney now has the same goals to games ratio as Ronaldo. He is an England great.

Magnus from Glasgow: Don't delude yourself England fans. We (Scotland) are still a pretty poor side, with a Championship defence. Beating Ireland hasn't changed that. There will be many, many teams better than us at Euro 2016. We'll see how you do then.

  12. More goals in Dublinpublished at 21:32 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2014

Robbie Brady's got himself a second goal of the night and it's fair to say the result is now settled between Ireland and USA.

This time the Hull City man has found the top corner with a left-footed strike from a free kick with four minutes left to make it 4-1 in Dublin,

Jack Wilshere thinks he's Gazza! Wonderful mazy run from deep, he beats two men but goes one too many and runs out of room. England in cruise control. Scotland have to snap them out of it.

"I'm surprised by Roy Hodgson. England have Saido Berahino and Ross Barkley on the bench. Both players could have got game time for the under-21s. Did Roy have any intention of giving them game time? It's great to be a part of the senior squad but sometimes it can do a player more good to drop him down to the youngsters."

Stevie May has got an instant chant from the stands, safe to say the Scotland fans are pleased to see him on. A more physical presence up top, allowing Steven Naismith to drop back off into the hole. Scotland haven't really laid a glove on England yet - they have just over 20 minutes to climb off the canvas.

  16. Goals in Dublinpublished at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2014

James McClean looks to have sealed victory for Ireland against USA in Dublin.

The Wigan midfielder has scored a third goal on 82 minutes for Martin O'Neill's side with a left-foot shot from outside the box.

  17. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2014

Kieran Gibbs replaces Luke Shaw at left-back for England, while Raheem Sterling does indeed come on for Danny Welbeck.

Scotland take off Grant Hanley and bring on Stevie May. Striker for defender, a positive switch.

'Ole!' stuff in the away end as England put together a long sequence of unchallenged passes. Scotland won't stand for that, surely?

A few sighs of frustration as Steven Naismith is run off the ball. The Everton man had nobody up with him at all, and Phil Jagielka easily took it off him. Scotland need a Plan C.
