"Barcelona and Real Madrid are the teams to avoid in the next round. If they can avoid one of those big teams, City will fancy their chances against most other sides in that half of the draw."

For the second successive season, City have reached the knockout phase of the Champions League. But the downside, if there is a downside, is that finishing as runners-up means they will face one of the European big guns in the last 16.

Barcelona or Real Madrid are the ones to avoid. But Porto or Monaco? I think City would fancy their chances against either of those sides...

Manchester City opening goalscorer Samir Nasri on Sky Sports: "I think the performance of the team was amazing. It was important for me to score, after the surgery I took a while to get to my full level, now I am. With Yaya Toure and Kun Aguero missing, It was important to show we were a team and we did it. At 1-0 the save Joe Hart made was amazing."

Manchester City keeper Joe Hart on Sky Sports: "First of all I've got to say it was a great effort from the fans, Rome is a difficult place to come but Samir made their night for them.

"People wrote us off without our key players but we're a strong unit, we believed in what we could do.

"You don't win two Premier League titles in three years easily. We have resolve, character and fantastic players - add that together and you've got a chance."

Manchester City are one of those clubs that never seem to do anything simply - and here is another example.

Two points from four defeats left them staring another Champions League exit in the face, but successive wins against Bayern Munich and Roma have seen them through. They're a plucky bunch.

"It's not been perfect throughout the group stages but Manchester City put in a perfect away performance tonight. Samir Nasri's goal was a world-class finish and Joe Hart has made two outstanding saves. Pellegrini can be so proud of his team.

"It's arguably their best performance in Europe. They had to put in a big performance tonight and the big players stood up to be counted."
