Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "It was another thorough performance and we thought it should have brought more than just a point. On the other hand it's a strong clean sheet. It was a good performance in all areas.

"There were a number of chances - a penalty call that anywhere else on the pitch was a foul - and sometimes you just need things to go your way.

"There's goals in the team, I'm convinced of that. It's a bit early for talk of staying in the Premier League. We're a work in progress - we know we have to score goals but you also have to keep clean sheets."

More from Newcastle boss Alan Pardew: "Cheick Tiote came to me and said 'we are playing well but we can't score' but I told him I was bringing Papiss Cisse on. Our senior players were magnificent today, particularly Tiote. I'm very proud of the way we conducted ourselves as a team and a staff and we go to the next game."

"It's been a difficult start for us," adds Alan Pardew. "I'm conscious of not making excuses because I've been accused of making excuses. I just want to defend the team, but we were really good at times today and hopefully the fans can digest that.

"It's not lost on me that I get accused of being arrogant but I'm also a proud man to be manager of this football club and I'm going to fight to keep it. My team need to reflect that and I think they did today.

"Ironically, one or two people clapped me as I walked out and I thank those couple of fans - it was only two. We need to win every game that we can at the moment to release some pressure. And I just want to end this interview by thanking the players because I wouldn't have liked to have played in that game."

It will be interesting to see how Fabio Borini gets on alongside Mario Balotelli in the Liverpool attack today.

Borini so very nearly found himself out of the Anfield door on transfer deadline day, but opted to turn down moves elsewhere to fight for his place at Liverpool.

He certainly seems to have done that, and manager Brendan Rodgers explained his decision to start him in the last half-hour, saying: "It looked like he was going in the summer but the window closed and he was still a Liverpool player. His pace will help us at the top of the field."

"Liverpool's vulnerability is at the back. If West Ham show enough positivity coming forward they can cause the Liverpool defence all sorts of problems. It's important that West Ham dictate the game and don't give Liverpool the initiative. The Hammers are yet to win at home this season, so this is a very important game.

"In the game against Hull, at times there was speed in West Ham's performance. Those speedy players give the side options and variety. I expect a good few goals in this game tonight."

Shaun, Kilmarnock: Liverpool spend £120 million in summer but yet Fabio Borini and Lucas Leiva, who were on the way out, are in the starting line up and £50 million worth on bench? Strange.

League One leaders Bristol City let a 3-1 lead slip at Fleetwood to draw 3-3 with the Cod Army. Fortunately for them second-placed Peterborough were unable to capitalise as they went down 1-0 at Yeovil.

Dele Alli helped himself to a hat-trick as MK Dons smashed bottom side Crewe 6-1 while managerless Port Vale moved out of the relegation zone thanks to Mark Marshall's late goal against Barnsley.

Play-off hopefuls Swindon beat fellow promotion candidates Sheffield United 5-2 while Preston recorded a routine 2-0 win over Crawley.

"When you are 2-0 up and pretty comfortable, of course you are going to feel as though you have lost it. Steve Bruce wants points as early as he can, and will look upon today's result as two points dropped.

"Alan Pardew's players went down with a whimper last week and so did Pardew. But today he looked up for the challenge, up for the fight, and that was reflected in how his players performed. This week they have got something to work with."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "It was difficult. We didn't play well in first 20 minutes. Swansea played well and we lost a lot of balls. It was complicated, but finally the result counts and it is a very good win.

"I don't like to talk about yellow and red cards. After, when it was 10 v 11 it was more easy for us. We didn't create a lot but we scored the goal."

"Jonas (Guitierrez) announcing his illness this week was a big factor. We wanted to do something for Jonas and the team were terrific."

    Mark Lawrenson

"Watching West Ham's 2-2 draw at Hull on Monday made me chuckle to myself a little bit because I bet Hammers fans were thinking 'crikey, what a different team we look now'. What is different about them is that that they have started to have a go at teams away from home, which is exactly what the club's owners were asking for before the season started.

"Liverpool have had a bit of a strange start to the season. They had a lot of passes in their defeat by Aston Villa last week, but did not seem to really get anywhere. But I think they are a better side on the road at the moment, because teams seem to have worked out how to stop them at Anfield. 2-0 Liverpool."

Paul Lambert on the virus affecting his Aston Villa squad:

"You try to play everything down but Ashley Westwood was being sick in the warm up and Andreas Weimann was getting it during the game. Nathan Baker and Darren Bent were also out with it.

"To play Arsenal you need everyone fit. The players have been brilliant so far this season and if somebody had said we would have 10 points by this time I would have taken it.

"We are probably going to let the lads stay away for a couple of days. The staff have got it as well. I don't know what kind of virus it is but it is certainly doing its job."

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet: "I don't think it was a special game or a good game for us. It was one of those games. The one who scores the goal wins the game.

"The good thing today was the clean sheet. For the first time we get a clean sheet. We need to improve though for sure.

"Overall, we played OK. Just OK. But OK in the Premier League is not enough - you need to be better."

Liverpool are yet to find a level of consistency this season, with defeat following a win in the five games they have played so far.

Their last game saw them beat Ludogrets 2-1 in the Champions League in midweek, but they will fancy their chances of ending their win-lose run against a side they historically do well against - they have beaten the Hammers 16 times in the last 22 league games between the two.

Hull manager Steve Bruce: "If feels like a loss. Unfortunately, we've made mistakes and got punished. We've scored two wonderful goals which would have graced any arena. Apart from the mistakes we made late on, we looked a very good team.

"Individual errors are something you can never determine what it is. Is it complacency? Tiredness? A mistake is a mistake and we've got punished.

"I have to say the Newcastle fans were magnificent and got behind their team. The crowd played their part in getting Newcastle back in the game. I don't think there will be any complaints about they crowd, they were magnificent today."

Neither of the top two could record victory. Nottingham Forest were held to a goalless draw at Millwall while Norwich City needed a second half fightback to draw 2-2 with Birmingham City.

Managerless Cardiff City blew a 2-0 lead at Derby County to draw 2-2 while Middlesbrough moved up to fifth with a thumping 4-0 win over Brentford and Leeds hammered local rivals Huddersfield 3-0.

Fulham remain rooted to the foot of the table after losing 1-0 to Blackburn. The managerless Whites have taken just one point from eight games this season.

Blackpool picked up just the second point of their dramatic campaign with a hard fought 0-0 at Brighton.
