"Liverpool challenged for the title last season, and do they aspire to do that again this time round? Because you can't drop too many games, can't lose too many points. Liverpool simply haven't come out of the traps yet.

"In the first 30 minutes of Liverpool's game at the Etihad against Manchester City they were eventually overpowered in midfield. The same thing is happening tonight."

Navdip Singh:, external Expecting same fightback as Newcastle. 2-2 the final score, point for Liverpool.

Wale Ibraheem:, external Steven Gerrard has been fantastic for Liverpool over the years but sorry to say it's time to move on. He has passed his best.

Ryan Cowie:, external West Ham doing exactly what Liverpool did last year - shocked the opposition early on with attacking football. Quality signings.

Things get heated at the other end of the pitch as Mario Balotelli get in a tangle with Adrian shortly after the West Ham goalkeeper clears. Angry words are exchanged between the pair before Mark Noble races over to urge his West Ham team-mate Adrian to calm down. Both Adrian and Balotelli are booked as a result of their brief confrontation.

In contrast to Brendan Rodgers, West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is sat back in his seat in the dugout, arms folded and with a contented grin on his face. Again his side come forward, this time Stewart Downing races at backing off defenders but shoots straight at Simon Mignolet.

Adam: Obviously Liverpool needed a stronger squad this season with Champions League football, but I think it can just cause issues. Last year they had to pick their best team every game, now it's just unnecessary shuffling.

Tony: Liverpool's defence is awful, granted, buts it's not helped by their shockingly average, almost shy goalkeeper.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is stood stern faced on the edge of his technical area. His side have scored in every away game in 2014, but they need to get the ball for that to happen in this game and at the moment it is very much the West Ham show.

They fancy a third as Aaron Cresswell has a crack at goal with a dipping effort from outside the area that requires Simon Mignolet to dive at full stretch to push behind.

Tom W:, external Do Liverpool even want the ball? Spending more time complaining to referee than challenging for the ball. Deserve to be two down.

David Mackay:, external This is awful. Why did we sell Agger but keep Skrtel? Embarrassing.

"Liverpool are shell-shocked. That's a magical finish - if Diafra Sakho has meant that then it will be one of the goals of the season. He showed composure and dinked it over Mignolet, and he knew as soon as he hit it that it was in. 2-0, West Ham are rampant, and what a start to this game!

"All the West Ham supporters have asked, since Sam Allardyce took over, to see play like this. The fans don't want anything more - they won't mind if they lose 7-3. This is West Ham, who have had historic moments playing attacking, free-flowing football. And this atmosphere, it's the best I can remember in here for a long, long time."

Madness at Upton Park as West Ham's second attack results in their second goal!

This time, Liverpool give the ball away just inside their own half and Mark Noble sends Diafra Sakho away on the right. He attempts to lift the ball into the area for Enner Valencia, but his cross goes beyond the reach of Simon Mignolet and all the way into the net.

"What a speed of play and tempo from West Ham, and wow have they produced! Wonderful run from James Tomkins, ghosting around the back, who then headed it back across for Winston Reid to tap in. At set-plays, everyone knows Liverpool are vulnerable. A breathtaking start."

What a start by West Ham! James Tomkins nods a ball into the box back across the face of goal and Winston Reid is on hand to knock the ball in. Poor defending from Liverpool though.

    Final Score

"I got the feeling the tone was set right before the start of the game, probably this morning when Paul Lambert got the news that several members of his staff were unwell. Pre-match he did have a rotten look on his face. Aside from the Villa players who were forced to withdraw through illness, I would think three or four of the players on the pitch weren't at full capacity.

"They now have got a free week before Chelsea next week, because they are out of the League Cup, then they have Man City, and they then go to Everton. What a run of games this is for Villa. It is a good job they got off to such a good start this season, because they may not pick up too many points from them."

There were contrasting fortunes for managers in charge of their team for the first time. Keith Curle's Carlisle losing 3-2 at Mansfield to remain bottom of the table while John Coleman's Accrington recorded a 5-4 victory at Northampton.

Struggling Exeter collected their second win of the season at the expense of Tranmere while Luton beat Cambridge 1-0 in the battle of last season's promoted sides.

  19. Text us on 81111published at 17:28 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Tom, London: The success of Southampton reflects how over-priced, over-hyped and, ultimately dispensable English so-called 'talent' is in Premier League teams. New signings such as Dusan Tadic and Grazioano Pelle are far better players than the likes of Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert and are valued at a fraction of the price.

  20. Manager reactionpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Swansea manager Garry Monk: "I would question the first free-kick against Wilfried Bony. Whether it was a yellow or not I don't know. The second one was a foul but there was no malice in it. It puts us in a difficult position.

"We were by far the better team in the first half. And in the second, the only shot they really had on goal was the one they scored from, which was the one time we switched off and got punished. But we will pick ourselves up and go again."
